What are ESO trials in general?

Trials in Elder Scrolls Online are the pinnacle PvE activity that involves a team of 12 players fighting powerful monsters. Some of those monsters are especially powerful – those are known as bosses. Trials are hard because monsters do lots of damage and have lots of special abilities that can also be quite deadly to any champion, no matter how well-geared it is. Team coordination is the key to succeeding in trials but, as you can guess, making 12 players act as one is not always easy to pull off and not every team is that effective.

Obviously, if you deal with a high-difficulty activity, you expect a high-value reward. And trials absolutely live up to that assumption as the gear you can obtain there is the best gear in the game and most trial items are a part of BIS builds for all classes. What's even more peculiar, is that there's no such thing as current content trial and legacy content trial in ESO. All trials are more or less equally current and you can get a BIS item in an instance that got released god knows when, back at the dawn of times (that is, before 2020). So don't be in a hurry to book a run to the latest trial (although it's always great to beat it too) – check character building guides first to know where the items that are of interest to you can be looted.

What trials are there in ESO?

There are currently 12 trials (as of September 2023). Here's the list of them in which they are ordered by the release date (newest first, oldest last). In the parentheses you can see the related DLC and the year of the release:

What rewards can I obtain in Elder Scrolls Online trials?

Most trials have the so-called trial armor sets that you can collect. They consist of several armor pieces that give you additional bonuses when equipped together. On their own they are also quite powerful so your champion will benefit even from 1 or 2 of them. But if you're patient and diligent enough to assemble the entire set, you will get an even better power-up.

Most trials have 4 sets: 2 light ones, 1 medium, and 1 heavy set. They all come with unique effects and stats and are good for different builds.
