ESO Classes Ranked 2026: All Elder Scrolls Online Classes

Pick one class, one role, and one goal for your next fifty levels. Strongest trial damage right now: Stamina Necromancer, then Arcanist, then Nightblade. Easiest start for a first character: Templar or Arcanist. That is the whole decision, and it is smaller than it looks, because in 2026 your class no longer determines your endgame build.

The current baseline is Update 50, live since 8 June 2026, with Update 51 arriving on 28 September. Subclassing arrived earlier, in Update 46 on 2 June 2025. Update 49 (9 March 2026) moved the Warden class into the base game, reworked the Dragonknight and Two Handed skill lines, and made skill and attribute respecs free. Update 50 added the Class Mastery passives and the Werewolf rework. Check the date on any guide you read. Anything written before March describes a different game.

This guide covers everything you need on Elder Scrolls Online classes: what each one does, how the class system changed, and which to pick. Take the row that matches your situation, then stop reading tier lists once you know your next action.

Choosing a class is the fun part. Grinding it to the level where the build actually works is not. Our ESO powerleveling service takes any class to the point where your skill lines and morphs are live, so you test the playstyle instead of reading about it.

🧭 ESO classes overview: what are the seven classes?

There are seven classes in ESO: Sorcerer, Dragonknight, Nightblade, Templar, Warden, Necromancer and Arcanist. Each character class carries three unique skill lines. Every ability inside them splits into two morphs you pick between as the line levels, so class abilities shape your gameplay far more than your race or alliance does.

Five of the seven now cost you nothing. Update 49 moved the Warden class into the base game alongside four DLCs: Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood. Two classes still need a purchase: the Arcanist, tied to the Necrom chapter, and the Necromancer, sold as a separate Crown Store class unlock that ESO Plus does not cover.

All seven classes are genuinely versatile. Each one can tank, heal and deal damage, because every class carries damage, sustain and defensive tools in its native lines, and since hybridization neither magicka nor stamina locks you out of a role. That is unusual among MMOs, where a class usually locks you to one or two roles. What that does not mean is that every class performs equally at the top end. ESO Decoded's healer and tank tables show which classes top groups actually bring, and the damage spread further down this page is wide. Every class can fill a role; not every class is the one a progression group picks for it.

The one restriction that still binds

Necromancer carries a quirk worth knowing before you roll one. Several of its necromancy abilities count as criminal acts in towns, so casting them near a guard earns you a bounty. The game never warns you about it. It catches people out for weeks.

For exact ability text and morph values, the ESO-Hub skills database tracks all seven class skill lines and stays current with each patch.

🎭 Which class fits your playstyle?

Choose on how you want to spend a hundred hours, not on tier position. To find the best fit, read the official description first, then what the class rewards and who should skip it.

Sorcerer class

ZeniMax describes the Sorcerer class as using "conjuration and destruction spells to hurl lightning bolts, wield dark magic to snare and stun, and summon Daedric combat followers from Oblivion."

The Sorcerer class runs on magic. Dark Magic, Daedric Summoning and Storm Calling give you lightning damage, damage shields and summons that fight without input.

Solo, that matters. The pets hold aggro while you reposition, which makes it one of the most forgiving magicka setups for overland and questing.

On the Update 51 PTS build the Sorcerer gains a group Offensive Penetration buff no other class provides, raising its value in group content. ZeniMax has not published a name for it, or for the Templar's new group Armor buff, and PTS numbers change before live, so check the patch notes when Update 51 lands on 28 September.

Skip it if you dislike managing pets, because the strongest Sorcerer builds are pet builds.

Dragonknight class

The official line: "Skillful masters-at-arms, Dragonknights use the ancient Akaviri martial arts tradition of battle-spirit and wield fearsome magic."

The Dragonknight class is the attrition pick. Ardent Flame, Draconic Power and Earthen Heart stack damage over time, armor and hard crowd control, so fights get won by outlasting rather than by bursting.

It took the first full combat refresh in Update 49, alongside the Two Handed skill line. That pass converted several poison damage sources to flame, Venomous Claw becoming Searing Claw among them, and rebuilt nearly every ability around the class's attrition identity.

Want a tank that survives mistakes? This is still the default answer, and on the Update 51 PTS it is the only class that grants group-wide Minor Brutality, though potions and sets still supply the buff outside the class kit.

Skip it if you want burst. Dragonknight wins slowly.

Nightblade class

ZeniMax: "Relying variously on stealth, blades, and speed, Nightblades thrive on conflict and misfortune, trusting to their luck and cunning to survive."

The Nightblade class rewards timing. Assassination, Shadow and Siphoning give you one of the strongest executes in the game plus self-healing that scales off damage dealt, so you stay alive by killing rather than by blocking. If you came to ESO from a stealth game, this is the closest class design to that.

The playstyle is high risk. You spend a lot of time in light armor at melee range, and the class will keep Minor Savagery as its unique group buff in Update 51, now covering weapon and spell critical chance together.

Stamina Nightblade sits at 22 on ESO Decoded's trial DPS representation index for 12 September 2026, filtered to stamina DPS specs, where the leading stamina spec reads 100, so top groups still bring it when the player can hold the rotation.

Skip it if you want a class that forgives a mistimed dodge.

Templar class

The official description: Templars "call upon the powers of light and the burning sun to deal massive damage to their enemies while restoring health, magicka, and stamina to their allies."

The Templar class is what you pick when you want fewer things to go wrong. Aedric Spear, Dawn's Wrath and Restoring Light cover melee damage, a simple spammable and the most forgiving healing kit of the seven. Nothing about it is fiddly.

It is one of the easiest classes to reach a competent standard on, which is why it is our standard recommendation for a first character.

On the Update 51 PTS the Templar gains an as-yet-unnamed group Armor buff no other class brings, which keeps it in raid composition even when it is not topping damage.

Skip it if you want a unique class fantasy. Templar is effective and conventional.

Warden class

ZeniMax: "Wardens are defenders of the Green, master storytellers whose nature tales become magical reality."

The Warden class is the self-sufficient one. Animal Companions, Green Balance and Winter's Embrace combine frost magic, group buffs and a bear that fights independently, so survivability is built in rather than bought with gear.

Since Update 49 the Warden class is free in the base game, which makes it a strong class you can try without spending anything.

Its full rework was scheduled for 2026. It moved to 2027 with the rest of the Class and Combat refresh, so what you play now is what you will be playing for a while.

Skip it if you want the current damage ceiling. Warden trades peak output for durability.

Necromancer class

The official line: "Masters of death, Necromancers can call upon corpses to serve as undead thralls and weave ghastly spells to both harm and heal."

The Necromancer class consumes corpses across all three roles. Grave Lord handles damage, Bone Tyrant handles tanking and Living Death handles healing, which makes its necromancy the most mechanically distinct kit of the seven.

It is also the class top raid groups bring for trial damage more than any other, by a wide margin. Stamina Necromancer sits at the top of ESO Decoded's trial DPS representation index across the 19 tracked encounters, and the numbers are in Which ESO class is strongest right now.

There is a tradeoff. Corpse management is a resource system no other class asks you to track, and the town bounty problem is real.

Skip it if you want simple. This class asks the most of you.

Arcanist class

ZeniMax: "Empowered by Oblivion, Arcanists utilize eldritch energies from Hermaeus Mora's realm of Apocrypha to support their allies and obliterate their foes."

Oblivion there means the Daedric planes, not The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Arcanists draw from the power of Apocrypha, Hermaeus Mora's plane of forbidden knowledge, added to the game with the Necrom chapter.

The Arcanist class is the newest, and in our view the easiest to perform well on. Herald of the Tome draws on the power of Apocrypha and builds Crux, a resource you stack to three and spend on empowered versions of your abilities. A long rotation becomes a short one.

Stamina Arcanist sits at 29 on that same stamina-filtered index, where the leading stamina spec reads 100, and spikes higher on encounters with heavy add cleave or execute phases. Competitive damage, short rotation. That is the whole pitch.

Skip it if you do not own Necrom. The Arcanist comes with the Necrom collection or as a separate Crown Store class unlock, and ESO Plus does not cover it.

🏆 Which ESO class is strongest right now?

For trial damage the answer is Necromancer, with one caveat: it is a paid Crown Store unlock, not a base game class. ESO Decoded indexes trial DPS representation against the leading spec, so the leader reads 100 and everything else is measured relative to it. As of 12 September 2026 Stamina Necromancer leads that index, and the chart below carries the positions.

  • Necromancer: tops most of the 19 tracked fights, taking roughly 48 to 91 percent of each fight's top 100 parses, which is a per-encounter share and not a position on the index
  • Arcanist: leads the Ossein Cage fights and Opulent Trio
  • Nightblade: third on the index

Those three are the DPS class picks at the top end.

What the parse data actually says

Stamina Necromancer100Stamina Arcanist29Stamina Nightblade22Stamina Sorcerer3Stamina Templar3
ESO Decoded trial DPS representation index, retrieved 12 September 2026, filtered to stamina DPS specs. The leader is normalised to 100, so these are positions relative to Necromancer, not shares of parses. The same source list also carries a Nightblade werewolf spec at 6 and a Necromancer tank spec at 5, which are not stamina DPS lines.

That data comes from ESO Logs via ESO Decoded, filtered to the highest-performing raid groups.

Read it carefully. Those index positions describe what the best groups choose to bring. They do not describe what you will parse, and they do not mean the other four classes fail.

Necromancer's edge is sustain, buff and debuff uptime, and a rotation that bends around mechanics. Arcanist is different. It climbs on fights with heavy add cleave or execute phases, which is why it spikes on specific encounters rather than across the board.

Why tank and healer tier lists are opinion

ESO Decoded does publish healer and tank tables from the same 19 encounters, but they measure the same thing the DPS index does: what the top groups bring. Treat them as a popularity signal, not a performance ranking.

Parse logs measure damage. A tank's value is mitigation, positioning and group buffs, none of which produce a leaderboard. A healer's value is uptime on buffs the group would otherwise lack.

Choose your tank or healer based on the buffs your group is missing. Update 51 will make that easier. From 28 September each of the original four classes carries something unique: Dragonknight holds Minor Brutality, Nightblade holds Minor Savagery, Sorcerer gains an as-yet-unnamed group Offensive Penetration buff, and Templar an as-yet-unnamed group Armor buff.

🔀 How does subclassing change class choice?

Subclassing lets you replace class skill lines with skill lines from other classes. Your base class still sets your passives and starting kit. The endgame build no longer follows from it.

What you can and cannot swap

You may replace up to two class skill lines out of your three. You always keep at least one original, so every character keeps some native class skills.

You also cannot stack two lines from the same borrowed class, so a Templar who wants two Sorcerer skill lines has to actually be a Sorcerer. That one rule matters. It stops every character collapsing into the same optimal build.

Unlocking it is simple. Reach level 50 on any character on your account, then finish a quest called "A Study in Discipline" from Bahtra at-Hunding. Every character completes that quest once.

What subclassing costs

There is no gold cost at all. The real cost is skill points.

Cost

The last two rows are the trap. An unmastered borrowed line holds one of your three account-wide training slots until it reaches Rank 50. You can still swap to a line you have already mastered, but you cannot start a fourth new line until one of the three is finished. Subclassing looks free on paper and expensive in practice.

The ESO-Hub subclassing guide tracks the current rules if they shift in a later patch, though it still lists the pre-Update-49 fee of 1,500 gold: since Update 49 the cost to respec skills and attributes is 0 gold.

Class Mastery, the thing you give up

Most tier lists rank the seven classes and stop before the Class Mastery tradeoff, which is where the decision actually gets made.

Class Mastery passives exist only for characters running all three native class skill lines. Level all three to 50 and a fourth line appears, offering five passives you slot two of. Experimenting costs nothing once the leveling is done.

Enable subclassing and that entire line disappears from your build. You get one or the other, never both.

The Arcanist set shows the scale of it. Abyssal Emergence generates maximum Crux and 666 Weapon and Spell Damage for 15 seconds when you fire an Ultimate. Unbound Potential upgrades rank 2 of Fated Fortune so that, for the duration of the buff, it also raises your damage done by 30 percent, halved against players. Erudite's Rigor turns Fatewoven Armor into a debuff and a group buff at once.

Those are not small numbers. A pure Arcanist is not a worse Arcanist, it is a different one.

Builds needing a tool the class lacks

ZeniMax has been candid about the risk on the subclassing side. In the Class Identity Refresh developer deep dive of 2 December 2025, the team wrote that "subclassing is objectively stronger than 'pure' classing by a large margin". Everyone drifting toward the same three borrowed lines is the outcome they named.

Master a borrowed line without grinding it yourself 🔀

A borrowed line costs 2 skill points per skill and 40 points to master, and it holds one of your three training slots until Rank 50. Our ESO subclass leveling boost grinds the line you picked to mastery so a wrong guess does not cost you a season.

🌱 Which class should you pick as a new player?

Pick Templar or Arcanist. Templar is free with the base game; Arcanist needs the Necrom chapter or a Crown Store unlock, which ESO Plus does not cover. Templar gives you burst healing and a short damage rotation, so it forgives the mistakes every new player makes. Arcanist produces high damage from a small number of buttons, which is the fastest route to contributing in group content.

Ceiling damage does not matter yet. Surviving your own positioning errors does.

The three-question test

Before committing fifty levels, run this on any class you are considering:

  1. The rotation test. Can you name the five abilities you will press most, and does that sequence make sense to you? If the class needs eight buttons before it works, it is not a first character.
  2. The solo test. How hard does it work to keep itself alive without a group? Every class has a native self-heal, but Templar, Warden and Sorcerer make it close to effortless, and Nightblade joins them once you can keep the kill pressure up, since its healing scales off damage dealt. If a class needs a healer to function, you will feel it every evening you log in alone.
  3. The regret test. If you dislike it at level 30, what does the fix cost? Regretting the class itself is cheap: since Update 49 respecs are free and subclassing covers most of it, the honest answer is usually "less than you fear". Regretting a borrowed skill line is the expensive one, at 40 skill points and a training slot locked until Rank 50.

Warden is the third recommendation. It is a good one if you will mostly play alone, because it heals itself, buffs its group, and sends a bear to fight independently while you sort out your own bar.

One note on community shorthand before you go looking for ESO builds. Players compress class and resource into one word, so a Magicka Necromancer becomes a magcro and a Stamina Dragonknight becomes a stamDK. You will see that shorthand across Reddit, guild chat and build discussion, though the big libraries such as Alcast and ESO-Hub label their builds by resource and role instead.

Whichever you pick, the finish line matters more than the class. CP 160, not level 50, is the real milestone, and the "Reaching CP 160" section below explains why.

🔄 Can you change class in ESO?

You cannot change a character's class. You can change almost everything that class does, which is what subclassing is for, and Update 49 made skill and attribute respecs free, so rebuilding costs nothing but time.

Between free respecs and two borrowed skill lines, a Templar who wants to play like something else mostly can. Some things stay fixed. The passives, the native line you kept, and access to Class Mastery if you never subclassed at all.

Reroll for a different set of class passives, or for Class Mastery on a class you never leveled. Otherwise rebuild. It is cheaper than starting over.

Weapon skills matter here, because they are not class-bound at all. Any class can run any weapon line, and weapon skills level independently of your class skill lines. A Templar with a maxed bow line loses nothing by rebuilding around it.

Where the class ceiling actually gets tested 🏆

Parse rankings are decided in trials and veteran dungeons, not on overland. Rated 4.8/5 across 4,800+ Trustpilot reviews, our ESO trial carries and veteran dungeon runs put you in the group content your class was built for.

❓ Is ESO getting a new class?

No new class has been announced. ZeniMax's published 2026 roadmap covers seasonal content, system reworks and the Class and Combat refresh, and none of it adds an eighth character class. The Arcanist, added with Necrom, remains the most recent.

The Class and Combat refresh scheduled for late 2026 moved to 2027 alongside Update 52. So the seven classes you can play today are the seven you will be choosing between well into 2027. That is unusually stable for ESO.

🗓️ What is changing next?

Update 51 lands on 28 September 2026 and rewrites how damage buffs work across every class.

Change

What it means for your class

Minor and Major Sorcery removed

Brutality now covers weapon and spell damage together, so magicka and stamina builds share one buff

Minor and Major Prophecy removed

Savagery now covers critical chance for both, ending the magicka and stamina split on crit

New Vexation debuff

Reduces healing on its target, a new tool in PvP and on some PvE fights

Warrior mundus reworked

Grants both weapon and spell damage at once

Class-unique buffs added

Dragonknight keeps Minor Brutality and Nightblade keeps Minor Savagery as class-unique, Sorcerer gains a group Offensive Penetration buff, and Templar gains a group Armor buff

The bigger news is what moved. The full Class and Combat refresh, including the Warden rework, slipped to 2027 alongside Update 52, which now lands in January 2027 rather than Q4 2026. The Crimson Veldt trial moved with it. Game Director Nick Giacomini told players "ESO is here to stay", though the delay followed the Xbox layoffs across Bethesda studios.

For class choice, that is good news. Current balance holds longer than a normal patch cycle would allow, so anything you build now has a longer shelf life. Watch the official ESO patch notes for the live version before rebuilding around anything above.

💡 When does paid help make sense?

Paid help should match one defined blocker, not a vague wish to be further along. Every path in this guide hits the same two walls, CP 160 and skill points, plus one thing worth testing before you commit.

Reaching CP 160

Gear below CP 160 is temporary. Every piece gets replaced the moment you pass the cap, which makes the stretch between level 50 and CP 160 the least rewarding part of a new character.

ESO powerleveling closes that gap, the same service that takes a new class to the point where its skill lines and morphs are live.

Mastering a borrowed skill line

Subclassing needs 40 skill points per borrowed line, and an unmastered line holds one of your three training slots until Rank 50, so you can swap freely between lines you have already mastered but cannot start a fourth. That is the most expensive mistake on offer, and new subclassers make it constantly.

Subclass leveling grinds borrowed lines to Rank 50 so you can swap freely instead of living with a bad pick.

Trying a second class

The rotation and solo questions only tell you so much on paper, and the real answer is playing the class. That only works if testing is cheap. It usually is not, because a second character starts at level one.

An ESO character boost puts a second character where your main already is, which turns "I wonder if I would prefer Necromancer" into something you can answer in an evening.

Start with the smallest service that clears the blocker

Pro players and delivery you can plan around. Pick the wall that is actually blocking you and start there.

Already rolled Arcanist? Our Arcanist class guide goes deeper on Crux and the Necrom skill lines.

✅ Conclusion on ESO classes in 2026

Class choice in ESO matters less than it used to, and in one specific way it matters more.

It matters less because subclassing, free respecs and non-class weapon skills mean almost any build is reachable from almost any starting point. ESO provides more room to correct a bad pick than most MMOs do. A bad pick is a detour, not a dead end.

It matters more because of the Class Mastery fork. Committing to all three native skill lines earns you Class Mastery passives that subclassing removes entirely. That is a real cost. Think about it before you commit to a borrowed line.

If you want the current damage ceiling, Necromancer, which is a paid Crown Store unlock. If you want the easiest competent start, Templar, or Arcanist if you own Necrom. If you want to play alone and never think about a healer, Warden. Everything after that is gear, and gear you can fix.

ℹ️ Frequently asked questions

What is the best class in ESO? For trial damage, Stamina Necromancer, which leads ESO Decoded's representation index across the 19 tracked trial encounters on 12 September 2026. ESO Decoded also publishes healer and tank tables, but those measure what top groups bring rather than mitigation or buff uptime, so choose your tank or healer based on the buffs your group is missing.

Which class in ESO is best for beginners? Templar, for burst healing and a short rotation that forgives mistakes. Arcanist is the alternative if you want higher damage for similar effort, though it needs the Necrom chapter or a Crown Store unlock, and the Warden class is the durable pick for solo play.

What is the least played class in ESO? ZeniMax does not publish class population figures, so any specific answer is guesswork. Parse data only tells you what top raid groups bring, which is a different question from what most players roll.

Can you change your class in ESO? No. You can replace up to two of your three class skill lines through subclassing, and respecs have been free since Update 49, but the base character class is fixed at creation.

How many classes are in ESO? Seven: Sorcerer, Dragonknight, Nightblade, Templar, Warden, Necromancer and Arcanist. The Warden class joined the base game in Update 49, March 2026.

Is ESO getting a new class? No new class has been announced. The Class and Combat refresh moved to 2027, and the roadmap adds no eighth class.

Do I have to pick magicka or stamina? Not since hybridization. Update 51 will remove the Sorcery and Prophecy buff split entirely: Brutality will cover weapon and spell damage together, and Savagery will cover weapon and spell critical chance together, for every class.
