What are skill points?

Skill Points are the resource used to purchase skills and upgrades for them. Elder Scrolls Online has a plethora of skills that you can unlock by leveling up or interacting with the world in different ways. Here are the major categories of skills:

CATEGORYDESCRIPTION
Class SkillsUnique to your character's class. Unlock them by leveling up
Weapon SkillsUnique to a particular type of weapons. Unlock them by using weapons of that type in combat
Armor SkillsUnique to a particular type of armor. Unlock them by wearing 3+ pieces of that armor type in combat
Guild SkillsUnique to a particular NPC guild. Unlock them by improving your relationship with that guild
Alliance War SkillsSkills related to PvP. Unlock them by participating in Alliance Wars
Each of these categories has several subcategories and so on. So yes, there are really many skills and you need lots of skill points to unlock them. You don't need to unlock all the skills on each character – just enough to support your build will do. And it usually requires about 100 skill points.

Most skills have several ranks. Each rank is also purchased with a skill point. The higher is your skill's rank, the more effective it is. The rank is directly related to your damage or healing, or whatever else the skill does.

Once you've reached the maximum rank, you now can purchase a morph for your skill with another skill point. Morphs are special upgrades that add an extra effect to your skill making it even more powerful.

You can always reset your skill points and use them differently – say, if you want to try another build. To do that, locate a Shrine to Sendarr in any major city (those shrines look like a drinking fountain) and interact with it. You'll be offered several options among which you'll definitely find these:

  • Refund skill points used for skills
  • Refund skill points used for morphs
Use either or both and you'll get your skill points back. There's no way to "lose" skill points: your character will always have the amount you've collected. The only thing that can happen to skill points is you can purchase a skill, an upgrade, or a morph with them – yet you can always get them back in the manner described above.

Skyshards are a great source of Skill Points

And you can collect Skyshards much faster with the help of our ESO Skyshards boost! Don't waste your time on running around Tamriel picking up gems! Leave that to pros!

Where can you get skill points?

Skill Points are numerous and so are the sources of them. Here's the list:

  1. Collecting Skyshards
  2. Leveling up
  3. Completing storylines (zones, DLCs)
  4. Completing quests & group challenges in group dungeons
  5. Ranking up in the Alliance War
  6. Completing the main quest line (character, factions)
  7. Completing the tutorial (or skipping it)
  8. Reading Folium Discognitum during the Mages Guild quest chain completion
  9. Completing the Maelstrom arena (you can get 1 extra skill point there)
Among all those sources, collecting Skyshards are deemed the most effective way to get skill points. Picking up 3 of them gets you 1 skill point. Almost every zone in the game has several Skyshards, so you can start your hunt right in the zone where your character is currently staying.

Leveling-up is also a good source of Skill Points as you get 64 of them for just reaching the maximum level. Other sources are good too: most of them will yield you Skyshards naturally, as you'll do most of those questlines and dungeons anyway.
