Best Solo Class in ESO 2026 - Solo Tier List

All seven classes, magicka and stamina split, ranked for general solo PvE.

The Magicka Sorcerer is the best solo class in ESO. Hardened Ward absorbs what you failed to dodge. Critical Surge heals you while you attack. Your pets keep dealing damage when you're busy staying alive.

Most solo tier lists stop there. This one does not, because a single ranking hides the thing that actually costs you a clear: a class that walks through overland can still stall at arc 8 of the Infinite Archive, and a class that sits mid-table generally can be a top pick there.

So this ranks all seven classes twice. Once overall, then again against the three walls where solo play actually gets hard: veteran Vateshran Hollows, veteran Maelstrom Arena, and the deep arcs of the Infinite Archive.

The class is free. The gear behind it is the wall 🗡️

Every setup below leans on a mythic or a trial set, and those sit behind leads, weeklies and groups you may not have. If the class is settled and the farm is the part stopping you, our ESO mythic item service gets the ring in your hands so you can actually run the build.

🎯 What is the strongest solo class in ESO?

The Magicka Sorcerer is the strongest solo class in ESO in 2026. It stacks three things. A damage shield, passive self-healing, and pet damage that continues while you reposition. That's the exact combination long solo fights reward.

Two independent tier lists agree. Hack The Minotaur places Magicka Sorcerer in S tier and calls it "just the easiest class to play in the game by far." ArzyeLBuilds opens its solo list with the same verdict, describing Sorcerer as the ultimate solo class and pointing at Dark Deal and Dark Conversion for resource recovery on top of Critical Surge for healing.

The mechanism is worth naming, because it explains the whole tier list below. Solo content doesn't kill you with burst. It kills you by attrition, over a two or three minute fight, while you're the only person healing yourself. Sorcerer answers attrition with a shield you recast, a heal that fires on critical damage, and damage that doesn't stop when you do.

Want them ranked without the solo lens? Our complete 2026 class rankings cover all seven. Our beginner class guide covers the easiest ones to learn.

🧩 What makes a class strong solo?

Three things make a class strong solo in ESO: healing attached to the damage you are already doing, a defensive cooldown that covers mechanics you can't dodge, and sustained single target damage for long boss fights. Burst matters far less. Surviving a three minute fight matters far more.

Sustain and healing without a healer

In group content a healer covers your mistakes. Solo, you are it. The classes that rank highest here are the ones where healing is attached to something you were already doing: Critical Surge on Sorcerer, Burning Embers on Dragonknight, Puncturing Sweep on Templar, the Siphoning line on Nightblade.

That is different from having a big heal. A big heal costs you a global cooldown and a resource bar you also need for damage. Passive healing costs you nothing.

Survivability under pressure

Shield, block or mitigation, pick one and make sure it is reliable. Hardened Ward is a shield you control. Dragonknight leans on mitigation and heavy armor. Warden leans on health pool and crowd control.

What matters is that it works while you're busy. Any defensive tool that demands your full attention during a mechanic will eventually get you killed at depth.

Sustained damage and ultimate generation

Solo bosses have big health pools and nobody else helping. Good damage over a long window beats a big opener. Ultimate generation matters more solo than in a group, because your ultimate ability is often the only answer to a burst phase.

Channels become a liability here. That is why the Infinite Archive section below disagrees with the general ranking.

🏆 ESO solo class tier list for 2026: the best solo class in ESO ranked

Two things to read carefully. This general list is not the Infinite Archive list, and it is not the arena list. Both diverge below, and the divergence is the point of this page.

The order draws on Hack The Minotaur's solo tier list, current for Update 48. We cross-checked it twice: against ArzyeLBuilds' 2026 list, and against how each class actually performs at the three walls below.

🧰 Best solo builds in Elder Scrolls Online: what to actually run

The best solo builds in ESO share a shape, not a class. One reliable defensive tool. One spammable that carries damage. One source of passive healing, and a mythic that covers whatever the class is missing.

Weapon choice follows from that. Destruction staves suit magicka setups and give you area damage without a skill slot. Dual wield and the dagger line suit stamina setups chasing single target damage. Two Handed splits the difference and got a refresh in Update 49.

One tool worth knowing. The Armory Station stores multiple builds on one character and swaps between them. Build one setup for overland and a second for arenas, rather than respeccing every time.

Hack The Minotaur ranks the same solo classes on video.

⚡ Sorcerer: the strongest solo class in ESO

Sorcerer is the strongest solo class because its survivability is passive or near-passive. That frees your attention for mechanics. It's the only class combining a controllable shield, automatic healing and damage that continues while you move.

Magicka Sorcerer

The core is four skills. Summon Volatile Familiar and Summon Twilight Matriarch occupy a slot on both bars and deal damage without input. Hardened Ward is the shield. Critical Surge heals you every second you are landing critical damage.

Add Dark Deal or Dark Conversion and your resource problem is solved too, which is what lets a Magicka Sorcerer keep casting deep into a long fight. A destruction staff covers area damage. Mage's Wrath handles execute. The whole Daedric Summoning line is doing work here, and none of it is hard to play.

This is also the easiest setup in the game to pilot, which is why it doubles as the beginner pick.

Stamina Sorcerer

Stamina Sorcerer trades shield value for mobility. It's the more fun to play of the two if you prefer melee range. Hurricane applies Minor Expedition and armor, Critical Surge still heals, and Streak remains the best panic button any class has.

For solo world bosses and open world play, either version works. For the deepest content, magicka edges it, because shield size scales with maximum magicka.

🌟 Templar: strongest overland, and the one big exception

Templar is the co-strongest general solo class and one of the weakest picks for deep Infinite Archive arcs. That contradiction is real, and it comes down to channels.

Puncturing Sweep is the best solo spammable in the game. It damages. It heals. It triggers two passives, Spear Wall for Minor Protection and Burning Light for extra damage. Breath of Life covers what the spammable cannot. For overland, questing and solo world bosses, Magicka Templar is genuinely S tier.

The catch arrives at depth. Templar damage is concentrated in class skills, and the best of them are channels. A channel stops you block casting, and at high arcs in the Infinite Archive the incoming damage does not forgive that. More on this below.

🗡️ Nightblade: the subclassing winner

Nightblade is the strongest solo class for players willing to learn it. It's also the best donor class for subclassing builds. Its Siphoning line attaches healing to damage, which is the trait that defines a good solo class.

The reason it does not top the general list is execution. Nightblade damage depends on proc timing and clean light attack weaving, and a solo player under pressure drops both. A dual wield dagger setup posts the highest single target DPS in the game and demands the most from you. Learn it second, not first.

Since subclassing arrived in Update 46, Siphoning has become one of the most borrowed skill lines in the game. It bolts solo sustain onto a class that lacks it. Want that on another character? Our subclass leveling service covers the grind.

🔥 Dragonknight: the durable brawler

Dragonknight is the most forgiving melee solo class. Its healing scales with the damage you deal. That suits players who want to stand in the fight rather than kite it.

Magicka Dragonknight runs Flame Lash, with Burning Embers underneath. That's a damage over time that heals you on every tick, scaled off your Max Health. Noxious Breath adds area damage and the Major Breach debuff.

Stamina Dragonknight keeps the durability, loses some sustain. It stays a strong arena pick, where mitigation beats ceiling damage. The DK is also the best tank in a group, worth knowing if you ever stop playing solo.

Coagulating Blood is the skill that saves runs. It heals more the lower your health is, which is the emergency button solo play demands.

🔮 Arcanist: the beam class

Arcanist delivers the highest damage per button of any class, through Pragmatic Fatecarver. It pays for that with thinner passive healing. Stamina Arcanist sits mid-table solo. Magicka Arcanist sits at the bottom of the general list.

The Crux system is the reason. You build Crux, then spend it to fuel Fatecarver, which produces large damage from few casts. That is excellent in a group and awkward solo, because Fatecarver is a channel and channels are what get solo players killed. The class also brings strong buffs and debuffs, which is why it reads better on paper than it plays alone.

Arcanist solo builds lean on the Velothi Ur-Mage's Amulet to push beam damage further. It works. It is not a substitute for the self-healing the top tiers get for free.

🐻 Warden: the Infinite Archive sleeper

Warden sits low on the general solo list and high on the Infinite Archive list. Both are correct. That gap is the most useful thing on this page.

Generally, Warden is durable but bar-starved. It wants its bear, its heals, its buffs and its damage, and there is not room for all of it. That is why it lands around B- and C+ on the general tiers.

In the Infinite Archive, that changes. Warden builds running werewolf alongside status effect procs reach very high health pools while keeping damage up, and players report clearing deep arcs comfortably on that setup. Crowd control and mitigation matter more than raw parse there, and Warden has both. Its frost damage applies useful status effects while you do it.

💀 Necromancer: the hardest solo class to justify

Necromancer is the weakest general solo class in ESO. Not because its damage is bad. Because its upkeep is relentless: minions need constant re-summoning, Blastbones is inconsistent, and the rotation leaves no room for reacting.

Spirit Guardian was the skill that made Necromancer solo work. It's weaker than it was. Templar and Necromancer sit at opposite ends of the solo spectrum for one reason: one attaches healing to a button you press anyway, the other asks for three extra buttons before the healing exists.

Necromancy in ESO is a resource you manage, not a theme you wear. Play it if you love it. Do not pick it to make the hardest content in ESO easier.

🌍 Best solo class for overland and solo world bosses

For overland, quests and solo world bosses, Magicka Sorcerer and Magicka Templar are the two strongest picks. The choice between them barely matters. Both clear everything the open world has at standard difficulty.

One thing changed in 2026. Overland difficulty is now yours to set. Challenge Difficulty arrived with Update 50 on 8 June 2026 and lets you opt into a harder, better-rewarding version of open world content. At the base setting you can easily solo every zone in the game on any class. Our 2026 ESO Seasons guide covers what else changed alongside it.

That matters for class choice. At base difficulty almost any class clears overland, so pick on playstyle. Once you raise the setting, the tier list starts to bite, and the sustain gap between S tier and C tier becomes something you feel.

🏟️ Best solo class for Vateshran Hollows and Maelstrom Arena

The two veteran solo arenas punish different things, so the best class differs. Maelstrom Arena punishes movement and environment errors, which favors mobility. Vateshran Hollows punishes boss mechanics and adds a damage check on the final boss, which favors damage.

Here is the distinction players consistently draw between them.

Factor

Veteran Maelstrom Arena

Veteran Vateshran Hollows

What kills you

Environmental stages, especially ice and poison, plus random adds

Boss mechanics, and a damage check on the last boss

What it rewards

Mobility, snare removal, patience

Sustained single target damage, clean mechanics

Scaling

Older, lower enemy health and damage

Newer, scaled higher

Best picks

Magicka Sorcerer, Magicka Templar

Magicka Nightblade, Magicka Sorcerer, Stamina Arcanist

The trap

Rushing. Speed breaks some stages

Undergeared damage. You will wall on the final boss

Magicka builds have historically fared better than stamina in Maelstrom. Skills that strip snares earn their slot there. Vateshran is the one where your parse matters, so it's the arena where a thin-damage class genuinely blocks you.

Most players find Maelstrom the better first attempt, because its mechanics are more forgiving even though its layout is meaner. Start there.

Want the achievement and the weapons without the wall? Our ESO arena carries cover the solo arenas. We run Dragonstar Arena and Blackrose Prison as group arenas too.

The Archive punishes a thin CP bar ♾️

Arc after arc, the scaling stops caring how well you play and starts caring what you have slotted. An ESO Champion Points boost fills the passives that keep a solo run alive deeper in.

♾️ Best solo class for the Infinite Archive

Sorcerer and Warden are the strongest Infinite Archive classes. Templar is a notably weaker pick there than its general tier suggests. The Archive scales indefinitely, so survivability while still dealing damage decides how deep you go. Opening burst does not.

The generic tier list breaks here. Players discussing class performance in the Archive in September 2026 are direct about why.

On Sorcerer, one player put the whole case in two words:

Hardened Ward. That one simple skill has always made the sorc king of survivability.

On why Templar falls off at depth, another was more specific:

templars damage is loaded into class skills, and their highest damage skills are channels that prevent them from blockcasting. At high arcs, mobs are too dangerous.

That is the mechanism. Block casting is how you survive deep arcs. Any class whose damage lives in channels has to choose between damage and survival, and at arc 8 or beyond that choice keeps going the wrong way.

Warden is the other winner, and it looks nothing like its general ranking. Players running werewolf alongside status effect builds report health pools above 40,000 while holding high sustained damage past arc 5. Once the scaling gets steep, crowd control plus a big health pool beats a good parse.

The practical read. If you're pushing arcs, Sorcerer first, Warden second. Don't assume the class that carried your overland questing will carry you here. Our Infinite Archive boost and Infinite Archive sets cover the arcs and the drops if you'd rather bank the rewards.

💍 Which mythics carry solo builds?

Four mythic items change what solo content is possible. Two of them change which class you need. Every one costs you something real, which is the part most build guides skip.

The two mythic rings that define ESO solo builds Ring of the Pale Order restores 20 percent of the damage you deal as health, reduced by 4 percent per ally, and blocks outside healing. Oakensoul Ring grants permanent buffs on a single bar in exchange for bar swapping. The two rings that define a solo build Each one buys a solo problem away, and each one charges for it. MYTHIC RING Ring of the Pale Order Gives: 20% of the damage you deal back as health Costs: minus 4% per ally, and no outside healing at all MYTHIC RING Oakensoul Ring Gives: permanent buffs on one bar, Empower included Costs: your back bar, so no bar swapping at all
The two mythic rings most solo builds are built around, and what each one costs.

Mythic

What it gives

What it costs

Ring of the Pale Order

Self-healing scaled to your damage

No outside healing at all, and the effect shrinks in a group

Oakensoul Ring

Permanent buffs on a single bar, including Empower

You lose bar swapping entirely

Velothi Ur-Mage's Amulet

More damage to monsters, plus Minor Force

Reduced light and heavy attack damage

Gaze of Sithis

Large maximum health, health recovery and armor

You lose block mitigation

Ring of the Pale Order is the one that turns a mid-tier class into a solo class. Its in-game text is precise about the trade:

Restore 20% of the damage you deal as Health. This value is decreased by 4% per ally you are grouped with. You cannot be healed by anyone but yourself, your pets, or your Companions.

Read the second sentence. At five allies the effect is zero, which is why this is a solo-only item rather than a build staple. It is also why it works: 20% of your damage as health is enough sustain to cover the passive healing that C tier classes do not have.

Oakensoul Ring solves a different problem. It hands you a stack of permanent buffs in exchange for your back bar, which collapses a two-bar rotation into one. You lose ceiling damage. You gain the ability to watch the fight instead of the interface, and for solo play that trade is usually correct.

Both rings come as a pair. Our Oakensoul and Pale Order ring bundle covers the antiquity leads for both. Our mythic items boost covers any single mythic you're chasing.

🤝 Can you solo ESO without a guild?

Yes. You can solo the overwhelming majority of The Elder Scrolls Online without ever joining a guild: every overland zone, every quest line, both veteran solo arenas, the Infinite Archive, public dungeons and world bosses at standard difficulty.

Companions extend that further. A companion fills the second role in a fight, and on a Pale Order build your companion is one of the few things still allowed to heal you.

Guilds are still worth joining, for one reason that has nothing to do with difficulty. Guild traders are how you buy and sell gear. That's a marketplace problem, not a solo gameplay problem.

Usually the wall is your wallet 💰

When solo stops working it is rarely the class. It is potions you ration, a set you never finished and repairs you put off. An ESO gold top-up removes the version of the wall that is only ever about money.

🚧 When solo stops working

Solo play in ESO has a hard ceiling. Worth naming it honestly. Trials, veteran dungeons, veteran hard modes and every trifecta achievement are group content, and no class or mythic changes that.

Four-player veteran dungeons sit at the edge. Some DLC dungeons are soloable on a strong build; most are not, and the hard modes are not. Twelve-player trials are not soloable at all, and no amount of DPS changes that.

That is where the tier list stops being useful, because the question changes from which class survives to who is in your group.

Want the trial gear without building a raid roster? Our ESO trials carries and veteran dungeon carries cover the content solo play cannot reach.

ℹ️ ESO solo class FAQ

What is the strongest solo class in ESO? Magicka Sorcerer. Hardened Ward gives you a shield you control, Critical Surge heals you passively while you deal critical damage, and pets keep the damage flowing while you move.

Is ESO worth playing solo? Yes. All overland content, every quest line, both veteran solo arenas and the Infinite Archive are soloable. Only trials, veteran dungeons and hard modes require a group.

Can you solo everything in ESO? No. Twelve-player trials and veteran dungeon hard modes are group content by design. Everything below that tier is reachable solo on a well-built character.

What is the easiest solo class for a new player? Magicka Pet Sorcerer. It needs four skills, the healing and shielding are close to automatic, and it is easy to play as a one bar build with the Oakensoul Ring.

Which mythic is best for solo play? Ring of the Pale Order, for most players. It restores 20% of the damage you deal as health, which replaces the passive healing that weaker solo classes lack.

Does subclassing change the solo tier list? It flattens it. Borrowing the Nightblade Siphoning line adds solo sustain to a class that lacks it, which lifts several lower-tier setups. Your base class still supplies your passives and Class Mastery line.

Is magicka or stamina better for solo? Magicka, slightly, and mostly in arenas. Shield size scales with maximum magicka and Maelstrom Arena in particular has historically favored magicka builds.

Do I need a specific class to clear Vateshran Hollows? No, but you need damage. Vateshran has a damage check on its final boss that Maelstrom does not, so a thin-damage setup will wall there regardless of how well you play the mechanics.

📌 The short version

Magicka Sorcerer is the best solo class in ESO. It isn't close for general play. Magicka Templar matches it everywhere except deep Infinite Archive arcs, where its channels become a liability. Those two are the strongest options for almost everyone.

If you are pushing the Archive, Sorcerer or Warden. If you are clearing Vateshran, bring damage. If you are clearing Maelstrom, bring mobility and patience.

And if your class sits in B or C tier, Ring of the Pale Order closes most of the gap. That's a cheaper fix than leveling a new character.

🚀 Ready to clear the walls solo play cannot?

Veteran Vateshran Hollows and veteran Maelstrom Arena stop most solo players at the same two bosses, and trials stop everyone playing alone.

ESO arena carries cover the solo arenas and their weapon drops. Infinite Archive boosts cover the deep arcs. Trials carries cover the content solo play was never meant to reach.
