The Best OSRS AFK Money Making Guide

If the rattling of coins sounds sweet to your ear, you're no stranger to Old School RuneScape coin farming. By now, you probably know how exhausting most methods can be, with hundreds of monsters to decimate to earn your daily bread. Perhaps you'll be interested to learn that you can make the same money or more without breaking sweat. That's what AFK money making in OSRS is all about.

In this blog post, we'll examine the peculiar phenomenon of low-effort GP farming schemes and go over the most effective of them. Let's start by figuring out if these strategies are really so low-intense.

😴 Can you really farm coins AFK in Old School RuneScape?

Let's get the terms right first. AFK = away from keyboard. What it most often implies is that a player who's AFK isn't present at their computer. In most cases it simply means that the character is just standing still. So if we approach the question from this point of view, the answer is no: you can't make money by just leaving the game running while you're away from your PC.

However, the OSRS community has developed their own definition of "AFK farming". It generally means that you're still at your computer, but the game requires only minimal interaction – a click or two every minute or so. You can just keep the game running in the background while doing something else at the same time, like watching a movie, shopping online, or even playing another game.

If taken from this perspective, the answer becomes absolutely yes. There are multiple laid-back ways to make money – and they can be surprisingly effective. Of course, more intensive methods are usually more lucrative – but that's only fair. Yet you can still earn many more coins than the average player by doing about a dozen clicks per hour. Let's see how.

💰 The best AFK money making methods in OSRS

Laziness is the father of innovation, no doubt. That's why there are dozens of AFK money making methods in OSRS – and their number keeps rising. We won't cover all of them here. Instead, we'll focus on just the lowest-intensity ones, which means as little combat as possible. The list features the best combinations of low activity and high profit – we'll go from the less optimal choices to the most optimal ones.

1. Mining Salts 🧂

⏱ AFK duration per action: 0.5 min
💰 Money per hour: 450,000 GP
💪 Skills: Mining 72+

Head to the Weiss mines with a solid pickaxe: Rune, Dragon, or Crystal all work fine. The only quest requirement is "Making Friends With My Arm", which is fairly simple to complete.

There are three types of salts, and they all sell for about the same price. They stack in your inventory which means you can mine for quite a long time without banking. While the AFK duration looks short, you don't really have to do much: just click the ore again to start another round of mining. Ores deplete very slowly, so there's a good chance you can just stand there mining a single ore for about an hour without moving.

You can also collect basalts there, but they don't stack and your inventory fills quickly. There's a way to sell them nearby, but that would make the method less AFK-friendly.

2. Smelting Cannonballs ☄️

⏱ AFK duration per action: 2 min
💰 Money per hour: 250,000 GP
💪 Skills: Smithing 35+

What's really great about this method is how undemanding it is. The Smithing level required for it is very low compared with most other GP-farming methods. The only compulsory quest you have to complete to unlock cannonballs is Dwarf Cannon which is pretty simple.

Some players prefer to use the Double Ammo Mould which doubles the output. The downside is that it requires a few more hours of questing and shortens the AFK duration per action. So it's higher profit per hour with more involvement (that is, more clicks). If that's a fair tradeoff for you, it's surely worth a try. Here's an opinion on whether it's worth it (video by Spookdog):

3. Fishing Karambwans 🎣

⏱ AFK duration per action: 6 min
💰 Money per hour: 200,000 GP
💪 Skills: Fishing 65+

Fishing in general is full of opportunities for AFK farming. Catching Karambwans is one of the best options. You need to complete the Tai Bwo Wannai Tro quest to obtain a Karambwan vessel used to catch these sea urchins. They are found in north-eastern Karamja and that's also where you stock up on the bait used to lure them.

Come prepared: use double-catch buffs (Rada's blessing, Spirit flakes), bring along a Fish Barrel (for twice as much space for your catch), and use all other fishing power-ups you have access to. Start by catching raw Karambwanji in the Holy Lake in the area – you'll use them as bait. Then locate the Karambwan fishing spot nearby, close to a fairy ring – click on it and enjoy about 6 minutes of AFK. The spot doesn't move unlike many others, so you can literally just stand there taking the urchins out of the water into your barrel or backpack.

4. Farming Abyssal Demons with Venator Bow 🏹

⏱ AFK duration per action: 2 min
💰 Money per hour: 800,000 GP
💪 Skills: Slayer 85+

This method requires a pretty expensive weapon – the Venator Bow. It costs about 80 million at the Grand Exchange, but it's money well spent. The bow's main passive effect is a ricochet. You hit two more targets in addition to the primary one. The extra targets must, of course, be close to the main one. What this means is that if you want to use this weapon for farming, you should look for areas teeming with enemies.

And we have one suggestion: Abyssal Demons in the Catacombs of Kourend. There's hardly room to swing a cat with how many of those fiends there are – which is perfect for us. Apply a melee protection prayer and shoot at any of the demons. The ricochet will make sure there are always a couple of them attacking you.

Check back every two minutes to see whether your character needs any help. Sometimes you'll need to heal, sometimes reapply buffs or collect the loot. Speaking of loot, it includes such valuable items as abyssal whips and daggers. On average, players gather enough of them to earn about 800-900 thousand coins per hour.

5. Farming Vyrewatch Sentinels 🧛🏻‍♂️

⏱ AFK duration per action: 8 min
💰 Money per hour: 920,000 GP
💪 Skills: Attack 90+

For a lucrative AFK method, this one has suspiciously low requirements. Basically, you only need to complete the "Sins of the Father" quest – which is a bit of a nuisance, but still bearable. It's also recommended to gear up for as much Strength as possible – and don't forget temporary boosts: the Super combat potion is particularly effective.

Arrive in Darkmeyer, cast a prayer, and start the culling. These vampires are numerous and aggressive, so your character will hardly ever run out of targets even if you're away for as long as 8 minutes. Essentially, you should set an alarm based on your prayer's duration. This makes it one of the most impressive OSRS AFK money making methods in terms of AFK duration.

The loot can include precious items like the Blood shard, which literally costs millions. There's a decent chance of getting one about every 10 hours of farming. Don't expect it to drop often – if it does, lucky you; but if it doesn't, whatever. There are plenty of other things to pick up like Rune items (dagger, full helm), Adamant gear (platelegs, platebody), powerful runes (Death, Blood, Nature), and so on. It's debatable whether you should pick up Vampyre dust though, since it fills your bags quite quickly and requires traveling to sell off.

So there you have it: five profitable ways to collect gold pieces without much effort. If you're worn out from high-intensity grinding – which can feel all too common in OSRS – these methods are a great way to stay in the black.
