How to upgrade the hideout in Escape from Tarkov?

There should be a place where your PMC can hide between raids in Escape from Tarkov. Somewhere to relax, warm up, and brew some top-tier moonshine... Luckily, it's not just a dream! While in Tarkov you can't live in a convenient, modern human dwelling like an apartment or house, you can at least call the hideout your home.

But of course, it doesn't just save your PMC from homelessness – it does much more. It's the only place where you can craft gear, for example. It also gives you numerous other ways to make more money and obtain all sorts of useful equipment. Learn more about what the hideout is, why it's useful, and how you can upgrade it quickly in this short but detailed blog post!

What is the Hideout in EFT?

Simply put, the hideout is your character's base of operations and residence. It's where you prepare for raids, research new technologies, produce useful items, and even cook food. Here's a list of things you can do there:

  • Craft all kinds of useful items (gear, ammo, medication, and more)
  • Farm Bitcoin (sell it to traders for a good profit)
  • Improve skills (level up Strength, Endurance, and other skills faster)
  • Run Scav missions (via the Scav Case)
  • Reduce the Flea Market's fee (via the Intelligence Center)
To unlock the most powerful bonuses, you'll need to invest time and money into the hideout. Fortunately, it won't distract you from other activities like raiding. Most of the hideout improvements just run in the background.

Also, you have access to the hideout right from the start. Just enter it through the game menu. To give you a better idea of what the hideout looks like, here's a video tour made by SickEgames:

How do I upgrade the Hideout?

There's no way to upgrade the entire hideout at once, as it consists of numerous individual modules. The total number is around 27 – some are event-specific, so not all of them are available all the time. So yeah, upgrading the hideout might actually be slightly more complicated than you expected. However, it has an upside: it gives you a lot of flexibility, too.

For example, if you want to go all in on medication, just prioritize upgrading the Medstation. Want to increase energy regeneration in your hideout? Invest in the Heating unit. Feel like showing off your spoils? Go for the Hall of Fame. And so on, there are many ways to approach developing your hideout.

That said, the question of "how" is still on the table. Sure, you upgrade individual modules, not the entire thing at once – but how does it actually work? The simplest answer is: collect the required resources.  What resources? To learn that, you need to specify which module you want to upgrade and what its current level is.

We've already mentioned the Medstation, so let's use it as an example. It has 3 levels, and each of them comes with its own resource requirements:

LEVELREQUIREMENTSCONSTRUCTION TIME
1
  • 50K Roubles
  • 1 Disposable syringe
  • 1 Pile of meds
  • 2 Aseptic bandages
  • 1 Bottle of OLOLO multivitamins
Instant
2
  • 150K Roubles
  • 3 Bottle of saline solution
  • 2 Medical bloodsets
  • 5 Esmarch tourniqets
  • 3 Medical tools
  • Therapist: Trader Loyalty Level 2
  • Health: Skill Level 2
  • Generator: Module Level 1
3 hours
3
  • 500K Roubles
  • 1 Ophthalmoscope
  • 4 Bottles of saline solution
  • 1 LEDX skin transilluminator
  • Therapist: Trader Loyalty Level 3
  • Skier: Trader Loyalty Level 2
  • Vitality: Skill Level 3
  • Generator: Module Level 2
  • Lavatory: Module Level 2
12 hours
As you can see, each new level requires more stuff than the last. And the stuff in question isn't just tangible items like bottles of saline solution. You also need to pay money, reach certain levels of loyalty with various traders, improve skills, and build other hideout modules.

That's a lot of work, but the rewards are well worth it. Each new level unlocks numerous crafting options, along with other bonuses. For example, the Medstation improves your health regeneration rate.

So let's sum up what module upgrade requirements can include:

  • Items: each module has its own set of themed items that it requires for an upgrade.
  • Money: mostly Roubles, but it can be other currencies too (a notable example is Euros required for the Solar Power unit).
  • Trader Loyalty: high levels of modules require high levels of loyalty.
  • Skills: some improvements require a particular level of certain skills.
  • Modules: some modules need other modules to work properly.
  • Time: most module upgrades aren't instant so be ready to wait for several hours (up to 1 day).
This chart should give you the idea of how interconnected and complex the module relationships are:

What are the best ways to upgrade the Hideout?

With so many modules and so many different requirements, you definitely need a solid strategy. Without one, you'll likely waste a lot of time and resources – and won't receive the benefits that justify all that investment. So let's see what savvy players on the web recommend focusing on when upgrading your hideout.

1. Some modules are more important than others

Not all modules are created equal. Many experienced players advise prioritizing the following 4 modules over others at least at the beginning:

  • Workbench – for crafting ammo & gear
  • Medstation – for crafting medication & increasing passive healing
  • Intelligence Center – to reduce the Flea Market fee and craft useful gadgets
  • Generator – to power modules and enable crafting
You should start with these 4 modules, but you don't need to max them out right away. It's enough to have them all at level 1 at first. After that, you can shift focus to other units and come back to these ones later.

2. Watch out for rare items used for upgrades

Some module improvements require very rare items. Of course, you won't always know in advance that you'll need later something that you're about to sell. That's why we recommend doing research as soon as you start working on your hideout – at least for the modules you're most interested in.

Here are a few examples of what your next module upgrade can require:

  • LEDX Skin Transilluminator – for Medstation Level 3
  • Graphics Card – for Bitcoin Farm (all levels)
  • Military Power Filter – for Workbench Level 3 and Solar Power
  • VPX Flash Storage Module – for Intelligence Center Level 2
And so on. Most rare items can be bought from other players on the Flea Market – but you're probably not going to like the price. So if you're lucky to find one of these items, hold on to them. Resist the temptation to earn some money at the market right away.

There's also a category of items that aren't very rare overall, but are required quite early in the game, yet can't be found in abundance by a low-level PMC. A good example is the Fuel Conditioner required for the Generator, one of the essential early modules. These conditioners are easy to craft by a high-level character, but you'll likely need them well before you're able to make them yourself. So make sure to keep any that you find.

But if it so happens that you don't have a rare item needed for an upgrade and have to resort to the Flea Market, do it smartly. Try checking it during off-peak hours, as that's when fewer players are online. That usually happens late at night and early in the morning in each region – especially on weekdays.

3. Craft useful items yourself

Many items required for module upgrades can actually be crafted in your hideout. And that's what you should do to not rely on random drops or overpriced Flea Market listings. Here are a few examples:

  • Fuel Conditioner – craft it in the Workbench, use it to upgrade the Generator (level 2)
  • VPX Flash Storage Module & Intelligence Folder – craft them in the Intelligence Center, use them to upgrade the Intelligence Center (level 2)
  • Purified Water – craft it in the Nutrition Unit, use it to upgrade the Bitcoin Farm (level 2 & 3)
  • Electronic Components – craft them in the Workbench and Intelligence Center, use them to upgrade the Workbench, Generator, and Security
  • Bolts, Screws, and Nuts – craft them in the Lavatory, use them to upgrade the Medstation, Workbench, and Lavatory
Crafting items yourself helps you both save money and effectively plan ahead.
