ESO: How to Become Emperor in Elder Scrolls Online
Becoming an Emperor in Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is one of the highest achievements a player can reach. This guide will walk you through the steps necessary to achieve this prestigious status, from understanding the Imperial City to mastering the Alliance War.
Becoming an Emperor
Imperial City & Alliance War
The Imperial City is a pivotal location where alliances compete for control. That competition is known as Alliance War. Participating in it is crucial to become an Emperor, as it serves as the main battleground where you will earn the points and improve your status.
Basically what you need to do to succeed there can be summed up with these 3 points:
Engage in large-scale PvP battles;
Capture and defend key locations;
Coordinate with your alliance for strategic dominance.
Gain Alliance Points and Rank Up
To become Emperor, you must gain alliance points through various activities. The most rewarding of them are:
PvP battles: Engage in fights with other players;
Capturing keeps: Secure and defend strategic locations;
Completing PvP quests: Participate in quests that reward alliance points;
Earning the most alliance points: Consistently perform well to accumulate points.
Achieve Emperor Status
Achieving emperor status requires being the highest-ranked player in your alliance. Your alliance must capture all 6 keeps around the Imperial City. The player whose rank is highest at that moment is crowned emperor.

Perks of Being an Emperor
The Emperor Skill Line
Upon becoming an Emperor, you unlock a unique skill line that includes 5 powerful passive abilities. They don't consume any skill points and are always active while you're in your home campaign. Quite expectedly, you lose access to them if you get deposed. Also, they won't work outside Cyrdail or your campaign.
Let's take a look at what those abilities do:
# | ABILITY | INFO |
---|---|---|
1 | Authority | +100% Ultimate generation |
2 | Domination | +100% In-Combat Recover of Health, Magicka, and Stamina |
3 | Emperor | +75% Max Health, Magicka, and Stamina |
4 | Monarch | +50% Healing received |
5 | Tactician | +100% Siege Weapon damage against fortifications & other siege weapons |
The Emperor Regalia Outfit
As an Emperor, you gain access to exclusive emperor armor. It's also known as emperor costume among players – and it is so for a reason. It's not exactly a real armor set – it's just an outfit that gives you no additional bonuses. Except for the unique looks, of course.
Take a closer look at the costume in this video (by ESO Model Viewer):
The best part of obtaining the Emperor Regalia is that former emperors keep it and can use it long after getting deposed. Obviously, they can also wear it outside Cyrodil. So it's the only thing you can show off after losing your royal status to mere mortals, except...
The Emperor title
This title is truly something to be cocky about. What makes it even more valuable is that you can't keep it for long. After you lose your status – and it often happens quite fast – it changes to "Former Emperor" which is also deemed very admirable but... Being a regular Emperor is undoubtedly much cooler!
The good news is that you can return your status of One Emperor by reaching the highest rank in another campaign. You can do it as many times as you need. But there are no more benefits to it except for returning the original title, regaining special abilities, and having fun!
Keeping the Emperor Status
If you're determined to maintaining the Emperor status, you should prepare to play a lot. It involves continuous effort and strategy. Just repeat the things that led you to the title the first time:
Participate in ongoing PvP battles.
Use siege weapons effectively to control key points.
Stay active to accumulate more points than your rivals.
Coordinate with your alliance to maintain control over keeps.
But don't be too hard on yourself. Remaining the active emperor of your campaign for a very long time isn't exactly that important or beneficial as some might think. Focus on having fun – if you think that the process is becoming an ordeal, move on to some other activity. There are hundreds of them in ESO, so you won't have to think of what's next for too long!
