Classes of Black Desert Online 5: From Tamer to Woosa

Hello, welcome to the last part of our Black Desert Online class guide. Here are the remaining 6 classes that we'll tell you about today:

  1. Tamer
  2. Valkyrie
  3. Warrior
  4. Witch
  5. Wizard
  6. Woosa
Among them we have 4 paired classes that share lots of similarities between each other: those are Warrior & Valkyrie and Wizard & Witch. The former of the pair is a male champion, while the latter is female. But that's not the only thing that makes them different – you'll learn more about what they have in common and what draws the line between them below.

As for other 2 classes – Tamer & Woosa – they are powerful assassins with unique mechanics that are fun to play but that might not be perfect options for beginners. But enough of this introduction, let's dive straight into it!

Tamer

SPECSUCCESSIONAWAKENING

RolesAssassin (melee)Assassin (melee)
Tamer is a pure assassin. Her unique feature is an ever present pet wolf that she uses for all kinds of abilities, including moving around on its back. Both specs focus on dealing lots of damage to one target so there's no much difference between them. The awakening, however, is deemed to be more complicated and APM-demanding but it can yield more damage and utility. The drawback of the class is very little AOE damage capability so don't expect to just spam zone-affecting spells and leave your opponents no ways for escape. Unfortunately, that's not the case but you'll hardly miss such spells as your damage is crazy enough to eliminate targets without giving them a chance to even try escaping.

Needless to say, this class is not good for new players. While it's definitely a very powerful champion to pick, for beginners it's going to be a nightmare to wrap their heads around her kit so we'd say, don't even try.

Valkyrie

RolesTank / supportSupport / bruiser
Valkyrie is a very complex character. It's both beginner-friendly and hardcore, it's both good at dealing damage and sustaining it. One thing is certain: if you go with Valkyrie, you'll certainly not run out of things to try with her soon. Her succession line is more about being heavily protected and dealing solid damage while also being able to support allies. It's great for solo play and grinding but it also has potential for not very massive team activities. The awakening line is first support, then bruiser. She's less defended than the succession spec but she makes with lots of utility spells for it and has some incredible strong attacking abilities which you wouldn't expect from a tank.

Should you try Valkyrie as a new player? It'll definitely not hurt, but we'd say that if you prefer changing several champions before finally sticking with one you like most, you better save Valkyrie for a second or third option. It takes some experience to really appreciate what she has in both of her lines.

Warrior

RolesTank / bruiserBruiser / tank
Despite what some people might say (especially those that experienced with BDO), Warrior and Valkyrie are more or less similar in many ways. They definitely share one concept of offering 2 strikingly different specs (in terms of how demanding they are) and they definitely fill the bruiser / tank role. Granted, Valkyrie is more about supporting the team, while the Warrior is more of a tank, but still. In fact, the awakening Warrior can do much more than just tanking and dealing damage – his spellkit is very, very deep and you can spend lots of days just trying out all the skills he has. That makes him notoriously difficult to learn but it comes with the benefit of becoming invincible in most combat situations, be it PvE or PvP.

The succession line feels like a demo version of the awakening one and that must have been the initial idea of these 2 specs. It's not bad but you certainly has fewer options for each situation. You're less flexible and while that's a pro for a new player it's an obvious con for a veteran. However, our advice would still be similar to that for Valkyrie: if you're new to the game, save Warrior as a second or third class to try to really see how good it is.

Witch

SPECSUCCESSIONAWAKENING
Easy to pick up?NoYes
Easy to master?NoYes
RolesDPS (ranged) / SupportSupport / DPS (ranged)
Witch is a prue caster and she's good at both destroying and restoring. Her succession kit is quite complex and it might seem confusing to most players at first. There's this thing with elements that you gotta choose to enhance your abilities. The system is quite elaborate and it's not always clear how exactly each element changes your spells. Simply put, there's a learning curve for the skill tree. As for the playstyle, witch is a strong ranged DPS with impressive support capabilities. The awakening line is more or less the same, although the skill tree is less complicated and her spells have a greater range which is a great thing. However, her mobility is noticeably lower and you'll have a hard time fighting against mobile enemies (say, assassin players). So it's better to play along someone else to have sufficient protection. That makes the awakening witch a perfect support.

Should you try her out as a new player? We'd say that not really. The element system is an additional challenge to deal with for absolute beginners. But the class itself is not rocket science, certainly, it's nothing like ninja or tamer. So we'd say that you should try her among your first 3 or 5 classes and you'll likely enjoy your experience with her.

Wizard

SPECSUCCESSIONAWAKENING
Easy to pick up?NoYes
Easy to master?NoYes
RolesDPS (ranged), SupportSupport, DPS (melee)
Wizard has some similarities with Witch, especially in the spell kit. However, the playstyle that either of them offers are quite unique. The succession wizards have a one school of magic general cooldown that makes you switch between abilities of different element for rotation. Apart from that, it wouldn't be wrong to say that Wizard fills the ranged caster DPS niche and does it quite well. The class is not static by any means and you don't have to trade mobility and escape spells for damage: you have it all, just learning to use it all efficiently might be a bit complicated. Support capabilities are also there: you don't just do damage but also support your team with one of the most useful power-ups in the game.

The awakening line is somewhat more unique. You'd not expect a wizard to fight in melee combat but that's basically what the awakening wizard does. You gotta approach your targets to use your spells. The thing is, with this line you don't really have many ways to do it since mobility spells are scarce. How does wizard solve it? With a grab, of course! If you can't come close to your enemies, they must change their position to suit you better and you can help them with it! Other than that, the Awakening wizard is a damage machine that focuses on 2 elements: fire and water – represented with 2 spheres that float around you. You can also play a support role very effectively with all the buffs and upgrades that this flavour of Wizard has got.

Woosa

SPECSUCCESSIONAWAKENING
Easy to pick up?NoYes
Easy to master?NoNo
RolesAssassin (melee)DPS (ranged)
Woosa is a fun class that has an apparent learning curve. The succession Woosa does lots of damage, has lots of movement abilities, and in general does all the things you'd expect an assassin to do. But she has a couple of unique mechanics: thundercloud is one of them. You choose how to place a thundercloud over the battlefield and use it to enhance some of your spells to deal more damage and affect enemies with various debuffs. Woosa can also accumulate incoming damage for the chosen period of time and then return it to opponents which is also quite an interesting and extremely powerful thing when used the right way. However, using things the right way is not easy with Woosa and you gotta keep that in mind. That means that she's not perfect for newcomers.

The awakening Woosa, on the other hand, is more forgiving for beginners and might be a somewhat fine choice for them. She stays aways from opponents, unlike the other spec, casts powerful spells, and places magic traps all over the battlefield. She can also be a good help as a support but the perfect way to play the awakening Woosa is combining her attacking and supporting potentials for the double effect.
