MMO games are what brings people together these days. It
doesn't matter which country of the world you live in, you can join the global community
of any MMO game within minutes and become a part of that world without buying any
tickets. We already have some popular and populous game worlds like World of Warcraft,
Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy XIV, Destiny 2, and so on. But new games keep coming
and some of them look quite appealing even at a distance. Here's our list of MMO games
to keep an eye on in 2023 and beyond.
Ashes of Creation
What is it: big-budget high-fantasy MMORPG built with Unreal Engine 5
Free-to-play: no
Release: TBA
Platforms: PC
Developed & published by: Intrepid Studios
Ashes of Creation's developers are dead serious about
their game. They know that it's going to be huge and they do their best to make it
happen. Sure, you have every right to be sceptical since it's Intrepid Studios' first
game and they have gathered money on Kickstarter on it, and so on... But so far we've
seen some great progress from them and it looks like their game is going to deliver most
of the things that they pledged when they crowdsourced funds. They are in constant
contact with the community and some builds of the game have already been tried by some
players. The game looks and plays great: it has lots of both PvE and PvP activities. You
can build your own cities, siege castles, defend caravans, and so much more! It's also
the first MMORPG running on the Unreal Engine 5 which is also quite a feat. You can
learn more about this very promising game in our other blog post. Also, there are lots of videos to enjoy, so
here's a couple of fresh ones for you (with Asmongold's commentary). It's quite long (1+
hour) but you can just take a brief look at it to get some idea of what the gameplay is
like:

Blue Protocol
What is it: stylish Japanese MMO
Action RPG
Free-to-play: yes
Release: 2024 for Western Countries,
already released in Japan
Platforms: PC, Xbox Series S/X,
Playstation 5
Developed & published by: Bandai
Namco
You can tell right away that Blue Protocol is an
Asian game by just looking at it. Clearly it sticks to the Anime visuals. that
works for you, mind another important point: this game is exclusively PvE.
There's no PvP in it whatsoever. Even the so-called Arena is about competing
against other teams in PvE activities. Naturally, these things are not bad but
they are definitely not for everyone. The cel-shading graphic style,
action-packed combat that is both simple for newcomers to enjoy and deep enough
for veterans to experiment with it, and highly customizable characters – all
these things are true about Bandai Namco's latest big game. It has already been
released in Japan and people mostly like it. In 2024 we will get it in the
Western countries distributed by Amazon. It's hard to say whether it's a good
thing or not: Lost Ark's distribution by Amazon has its flaws but in general
it's alright.

Corepunk
What is it: isometric MMORPG with gameplay elements from MOBA
Free-to-play: no
Release: TBA
Platforms: PC
Developed & published by:
Artificial Core
Corepunk's concept is brilliant. A combination
of an MMORPG and a MOBA sounds crazy but just look at the gameplay footage
and you'll realize how great it might actually work out. The Ukrainian
studio Articial Core has already done a great job and they could have
started the beta if it hadn't been for the tragic events in their home
country. The Russian invasion of 2022 that is, unfortunately, still ongoing
has made it hard for the company to carry on with their project. Luckily,
they've managed to redesign their working process and now they seem to be on
their way to deliver one of the biggest MMORPG releases of 2020's. Let's
wish them well!
Here's a little gameplay / feature-update
video from the developers:
Dune Awakening
What is it: sandbox-survival MMO in the revitalized franchise's setting
Free-to-play: no
Release: TBA
Platforms: PC, Xbox Series
S/X, Playstation 5
Developed & published by:
Funcom
Thanks to the new Dune movies, there's
been a resurgence in interest towards all things Dune and new games
started appearing. The first ball in this regard was Dune Spice Wars, a
great strategy-survival game made by the creators of the praised
Northgard. Now it's time for something more massively played and Dune
Awakening, a sandbox survival MMO, comes to fill this slot. The footage
is scarce and so are the details of what systems the game is going to
have. Funcom's latest massive multiplayer game "Conan Exiles" wasn't
exactly impeccable. So it's too early to get hyped but we surely
want this game to be good. Dune deserves a great MMO and it's
time we finally got one.
Here's a video which showcases some
gameplay as well as gives some commentary by the devs:
Ark 2
What is it: survival MMO with
dinosaurs and Vin Diesel
Free-to-play: no
Release: TBA
Platforms: PC, Xbox Series
S/X
Developed & published by:
Studio Wildcard
The better and bolder part of the quite
popular dinosaur-survival MMORP "Ark" is upon us. Unfortunately, we're
not getting it this year (2023) but there's a high chance that it will
happen in 2024. Fine by us: if we were to choose between a sooner
release of an unfinished game and a later release of a well-polished
one, we'd choose the latter. Yeah, yeah, we know that these days games
can have both: a later release and an unfinished state. But too much has
been already invested in Ark 2, so we really hope that Vin Diesel won't
let it be bad. When you have such a man ready to kick your ass for
delivering a bad product, we'd be quite motivated to not let him down!
So far the videos that the studio has shown look pretty good. The combat
system is supposed to become more Souls-like and it's also an
interesting move. Take a look at it all yourself!
Here's a trailer to have a better idea of
the aesthetics:

So those were our top-5 upcoming MMORPGs and we hope
you've learnt something new. And if you haven't and you knew it all before checking our
article, congrats! You're really well-informed in regard to games! Anyway, let's hope
that at least some of these games end up being really good. The MMORPG scene needs that.
World of Warcraft has been the king for too long and Final Fantasy XIV and Elder Scrolls
Online are good contenders but with their own limitations. Besides they both were
released about 10 years ago. The newest blood in this pack is New World but... not many
people talk about it now for obvious reasons. It's not exactly a bad game. It's just
that it's not good enough to leave those older ones for it for most players. Hopefully,
Ashes of Creation and others will be more appealing!
