PokeCoins Guide: How to get coins in Pokemon Go?

At some point, every Pokemon Go player starts wondering: Are there even any PokeCoins left out there? Why do they trickle in so slowly? Why are they so hard to find? In this blog post, we're taking a deep dive into PokeCoins – just as diligently as the most enthusiastic numismatists (that's coin collectors, if you're wondering). We'll break down what they are, what you can buy with them, and how to actually earn them. Feel free to use the table of contents and jump straight to the section that interests you most.

🪙 What are coins in Pokemon Go?

Simply put, PokeCoins are the main in-game currency. You can use them to buy essentials like incubators, lure modules, and additional storage – as well as fun extras like special event bundles or premium cosmetics in the Style menu. Coins are crucial for powering up and customizing your roster.

Earning them might be tricky as it's not always clear what activities provide them reliably. Common ways to earn coins include defending Gyms, spinning PokeStops, and completing timed Research tasks. Or you can simply buy them in the Pokemon Go Shop – which is, conveniently, where you'll also find plenty of tempting things to spend them on.

Stack up enough coins, and you'll unlock powerful items, flashy cosmetics, and exclusive event deals. Curious what a massive PokeCoin fortune can get you? Let's peek into the high-roller life of Pokemon Go's wealthiest trainers to find out!

🛍 What can you buy with PokeCoins?

While Pokemon Go does offer some outrageously expensive vanity items (team-themed outfits, anyone?), in this section we'll focus on something most players will find useful. We'll cover three of the most popular and practical items you can buy with PokeCoins:

  1. Storage upgrades
  2. Incubators
  3. Lures
You'll learn what they do, what they cost, and how to approach buying them – both for people on a budget and big spenders. Let's start with...

Storage Upgrades 🎒

🤔 What do they do? Few things are as frustrating as "Your bag is full" or "No more room" – especially when you're deep into a hunt for a particularly elusive Pokemon. Storage upgrades expand your inventory and come in two types:

  • Pokemon Storage Upgrade – lets you hold more Pokemon, so you don't have to transfer favorites or rares just to make room.
  • Item Bag Upgrade – lets you carry more PokeBalls, Berries, Portions, and other essentials, which is especially useful during big events or long play sessions.
Each upgrade adds 50 slots. These are some of the smartest long-term investments a Trainer can make – and instantly useful, too!

💰 What's the price? 200 coins (both Storage and Item Bag upgrade)

⚖️ If you're on a budget... Focus on which storage fills up first. You might still run out of space during a particularly busy event, of course, but apart from that you'll be fine with 1-2 storage upgrades a month.

🤑 If you're on a roll... If you're planning to go all out for a Community Day, GO Fest, or raid run, get multiple storage upgrades in advance. The more extra slots you add, the longer you'll be able to stay out in the wild without breaks. Fewer breaks = more catches and XP with less stress.

Incubators 🥚

What do they do? Hunting rare Pokemon can quickly escalate into a full-blown grindfest. But savvy Trainers know how to take the easy road – and incubators are as easy as it gets. With them you hatch Pokemon from eggs passively while you walk. Just pop in an egg and forget about it – until it hatches into a new Pokemon. And often, that hatch is a high-IV, rare, or even event-exclusive species!

There are three types of incubators:

  • Infinite incubator – standard distance required for hatching, doesn't break, you only get one (and it's yours by default)
  • Regular incubator – same standard distance, breaks after 3 uses
  • Super incubator – shorter distance (by about 30%), still breaks after 3 uses
Different eggs require different distances to hatch. For example, the "fastest" ones (2 km eggs) take 2,600 steps with a regular incubator (roughly 1.24 miles). With a super incubator, that drops to 1,716 steps (around 0.82 miles). And the difference becomes more noticeable when you hatch "slower" eggs or do several at once.

💰 What's the price? 150 coins (regular), 200 coins (super)

⚖️ If you're on a budget... Stick to the infinite-use incubator and add one extra Regular Incubator now and then – especially when stacking eggs during events or long walks. Keep an eye on bundle deals too – incubators often show up at a discount in event boxes.

🤑 If you're on a roll... Aiming to hatch hard and fast? Stock up on super incubators to rack up more rewards per kilometer. They're perfect for events with reduced hatch distance or exclusive egg pools. Go for bundles or event boxes – they give you a better per-unit price and throw in other useful goodies like Raid Passes or Lucky Eggs.

Lures 🧀

What do they do? Wouldn't life as a Trainer be easier if Pokemon came to you instead of the other way round? Right – waiting on an elusive spawn or rambling in circles is never fun. Lures are designed to help you with that: they attract wild Pokemon in flocks to a particular location. Depending on the type of a lure that location varies:

  • Lure module – attracts Pokemon to a chosen PokeStop for 30 minutes. Great for group play and hotspot grinding.
  • Incense – attracts Pokemon to your real-time location for 60 minutes. Perfect for solo play or playing while walking.
Lures don't guarantee better-quality Pokemon, but they do guarantee more encounters. That translates to more XP, Stardust, and better odds at catching shinies or limited-time event Pokemon.

To give you a better idea of how Lure Modules work, here's a brief overview (by IGN):

💰 What's the price? 40 coins (Incense), 100 coins (Lure Module)

⚖️ If you're on a budget... Keep a couple of Incenses or Modules handy, depending on your playstyle. Use them during spawn-boosting events. A great example is Spotlight Hour, held every Tuesday, when one specific Pokemon spawns more often for an hour – if you buy just one lure a week, this should be the time to use it.

🤑 If you're on a roll... Lures are often included in high-value bundles that cost more upfront but pack your inventory with tools to maximize event gains. Also, consider specialty Lures Modules like Glacial, Mossy, or Magnetic: they attract specific types of Pokemon and unlock unique evolutions.

Now that you know how to spend your PokeCoins, you may be wondering: how do you actually earn them? Preferably, fast. And this is the right place to ask that question!

💰 How to earn coins in Pokemon Go fast?

There's no single best road to Poke wealth. It's all about making the most of all the opportunities that the game presents. Let's take a look at a few of them.

Defending Gyms 🏰

Once you reach level 5 and join a team, you can start placing your Pokemon in Gyms controlled by your team. For every 10 minutes your Pokemon defends a Gym, you earn 1 PokeCoin, up to a maximum of 50 coins per day. And you don't even have to do anything yourself – it's completely passive!

The bad part is that you only receive that money after your Pokemon is defeated. And nobody knows when that happens! It could be an hour or two... or several days? So yeah, while it's effective and lucrative, it's also rather unpredictable.

✅ PROS❌ CONS
Fully passive incomeDaily cap of 50 coins
You can defend multiple Gyms at onceUnpredictable timing

Field Research Tasks 🔎

You can pick up Field Research Tasks by spinning PokeStops. These are mini-objectives like "Catch 3 Grass-type Pokemon" or "Make 5 great throws". Completing them usually rewards items or Pokemon encounters – but occasionally, especially during limited-time events, you might earn PokeCoins as a bonus. That's rarer than we'd love it to be – but that's still an opportunity that you shouldn't miss!

✅ PROS❌ CONS
Quick, easy, and you can stack themYou never know where a new task appears

Purchase Coins in the Shop 💳

If you want full control over how many PokeCoins you get – and you want them now, you can buy them directly from the in-game shop using real money. Prices scale with quantity: for example, 100 PokeCoins for $0.99 or 1,200 for $9.99, with better value per coin in larger bundles. Just keep in mind that pricing varies by region, so make sure to check your local store for precise information.
