How to Rank Up in Rocket League: Fastest Ways to Improve Your Competitive Rank

If we had to choose just two words to describe Rocket League, they'd be "deceptively simple". After all, what could be more straightforward than cars crashing into each other trying to score a goal with a huge ball? It's just an enjoyable mess where luck decides everything, right? Wrong! Few games are as mechanically deep as this one. And sooner or later, everyone comes to that conclusion and starts wondering how to rank up in Rocket League fast.

Here's our take: it all starts with knowledge. Learn the essentials, and you'll find the direction to move in. This blog post gives you all the basics you need for that: how ranking works, what you get for reaching higher tiers, and how to actually reach them. Let's begin!

🏎 How does ranking work in Rocket League?

On the surface, ranking in Rocket League is quite similar to most other modern competitive games. However, there are several surprising things that make it special. Let's break it down one step at a time: what ranks there are, how matchmaking works, and what happens when a season ends.

Structure: What tiers are there? 🤔

Rocket League's ladder is divided into tiers, then ranks, then divisions. Let's start with tiers – here's the full list of them, from highest to lowest:

  1. Supersonic Legend
  2. Grand Champion
  3. Champion
  4. Diamond
  5. Platinum
  6. Gold
  7. Silver
  8. Bronze
Each tier is further divided into three ranks: I, II, and III. Unlike many other competitive games, the lowest rank in RL is I and the highest is III. So if you're Gold I, you're below someone from Gold III. Most games would call it a day at this point, as this double division seems to be precise enough to locate you in the leaderboard. But no – Rocket League needs to go deeper.

That's why ranks are further split into four more divisions: I, II, III, and IV – in the same order as ranks, low to high. That means that whenever you're asked what rank you are, you'll be expected to say something along these lines: Gold III Division IV or Platinum II Division II.

Matchmaking: How are players matched? ⚔️

Matchmaking relies on the MMR: MatchMaking Rating. You can't find it anywhere inside the game since it's a hidden value. Players in the same rank usually have similar MMRs, but not always – it depends heavily on your match history. If you're climbing the ladder fast with almost no losses, your MMR might be noticeably higher than that of your leaderboard neighbour who's been at that rank for a while.

There's also no rank decay which means that you don't lose MMR and ranks due to inactivity. Not directly, that is – if you come back after a year-long break, you'll have to adapt to a new meta which will likely result in you losing more games than before. That will decrease your matchmaking stats.

Finally, if you prefer team-queue, you should remember that Rocket League features the so-called "rank disparity" effect. It means that you can't queue for a ranked match with a player who's more than 3 ranks away from you (in either direction). That makes carrying friends a bit more complicated – and some would say it's a good thing as it makes the competition fairer.

Season end: How does transition happen? ➡️

What's really unusual for a modern competitive game is that Rocket League uses what's known as soft resets. You don't lose your rank – instead, you get relegated to a lower one. What that also means is that there are no placement matches each time another season starts. Hence, you'll depend less on 10 random games that can go either horribly wrong or surprisingly well.

🥇 What rewards do you get for ranking up?

Okay, so we've covered the basics of how the system works. What about the rewards you get for winning a lot? Some players would say that a higher rank is a reward enough on its own. Sure, but not everyone would agree. Those that wouldn't, would be happy to know that they also get season-themed cosmetic items. On top of that, if you achieve one of the top-two ranks – Grand Champion or Supersonic Legend – you'll earn an exclusive title.

Note that you get rewards for the highest rank you've reached this season, not the latest. But "the highest rank" doesn't just mean that you've been promoted to it – it also means that you've won 10 games or more in it. That means that you don't just have to think of how to increase rank in Rocket League – but also how to consistently win at your new rank.

Now let's see a few examples of rewards from recent seasons:

Season 18: Wheels 🛞

The appearance of your wheels changes to show off your best achievement of the previous season. The tier's logo is attached to the disc, and the wheel itself glows with your tier's color.

Season 17: Goal Explosions ⚽️

A customized explosion effect that you see every time after scoring a goal. It's the same explosion that throws you away from the opponent's goal.

Season 16: Rocket Boosts 🚀

When you accelerate with a rocket boost, the boost trail has the color related to your last season's highest rank.

Safe Credit deliveries 🎁

You don't have to wait till the end of the season to unlock a flashy visual update for your battle cars. The in-game shop is full of customizations – and they can become yours at a much lower price. ☄️ How do you rank up fast in RL?

As much as we'd love to give you one simple answer, the truth is quite complicated. There's no one magic trick that can take you straight to Supersonic Legend out of Bronze overnight. That doesn't mean it's impossible though: many players increase their skill and rank up much faster than they used to. With the five recommendations we're about to give you, your chances will rise too.

1. Optimize your settings ⚙️

Surprisingly, this is a much deeper topic than you might expect and it deserves an article of its own. For now, we'll give you the main points:

  • Visuals shouldn't be distractive and resource-intense. That means turn off High Quality Shaders, Dynamic Shadows, Weather Effects, etc.
  • No camera shake – never!
  • You should see not just your car but also the surroundings. Keep the Field of View at 110 and the camera distance between 260-280.
  • Keep sensitivity lower when you're just starting out and gradually raise it as you get more confident.
And so much more. One important thing to remember: NEVER start a ranked match immediately after changing settings. First play a regular game or two – at least! – to get used to the changes. Sometimes it takes longer than that – be patient. Don't let that ruin ranked games for you.

2. Play in a team 🤝

Find a reliable teammate and start your journey up together. It's emotionally and psychologically easier to do anything with someone on your side. But make sure to take teamwork seriously: communicate with voice, use callouts – and never blame each other. Be patient and positive, and that will go a long way.

3. Play consistently 🗓

Consistently doesn't mean a lot. Just make sure you play daily – an hour or two would do. Muscle memory is very important in such intense, skill-based games as Rocket League – and nothing develops it faster than practicing regularly. That will help the answer to "How to rank up in RL?" come naturally – as making the optimal moves in matches will become second nature to you.

4. Separate training from ranking 🏋️‍♀️

Never try learning new things in ranked games. You have Freeplay for that – and it's absolutely okay to play it when you want to hone a particular skill.

Some pros say the best way to approach the game is by having several days of practice altered with several days of ranked play. This way, you always have time to analyze your ranked games (by watching replays) and work on fixing your mistakes and developing useful habits outside the competitive mode.

5. Master skills smarter 📖

Here are two things each player must know:

  1. Rocket League is very skill-based, and there are loads of things to learn to master it.
  2. You don't have to learn it all at once.
As you progress through the ranks, you'll notice how differently opponents behave at each level. Things that only the best players in Gold can pull off are common in Platinum, so they won't give you the same edge any longer. That means there's something else that will. Here's a brief list of skills that become essential at different stages:

  • Platinum – Kickoffs done properly
  • Diamond – Catches and flicks
  • Champion – Backward defense
This list isn't definitive, of course. Each new season brings balance changes and gameplay trends that affect the meta. Make sure to follow theory-focused creators who release content with meta updates and pro tips.

The main thing to remember: learn skills step by step. Don't overload your playstyle – at lower leagues you don't have to know everything. You'll naturally learn all the core skills as you progress, and eventually put them to the test in the Supersonic Legend tier – but rarely before that.
