Dark Brotherhood is a guild of mysterious assassins operating all around Tamriel. You can join them if you have purchased the DLC titled "Dark Brotherhood" or have activated the ESO Plus subscription. While they might not be among the best guilds to level up the reputation with (those would be Fighters, Mages, and Psijic), the Brotherhood still have some unique advantages that might attract players. In this brief but detailed blog post let's take a look at what those advantages are!
What rewards does the Dark Brotherhood have?
Just like all other guilds, if you get to know each other, members of the Dark Brotherhood won't let you leave them empty-handed. They have lovely rewards that make doing business with them worthwhile:
- Skills (more on that in the next section)
- Cadaverous Assassin appearance & The Executioner title
- Dark Brotherhood style motifs
- Monk's Disguise
- Sithis' Touch set items
- An antiquity lead for the Gaze of Sithis helmet
- Housing items
- Potions / Poisons
- Bounty / Heat removing consumables (scrolls)
Wow, that's a lot, isn't it? Much more than most other guilds have, so how does it work? Skills are the most straightforward: you get them as you progress with the guild's skill tree (you'll learn more about it below). The Cadaverous Assassin, the Executioner title, and the style motifs can be earned by doing Black Sacrament contracts. And the rest is obtainable via a mysterious Shadowy Supplier NPC in certain locations. Read on to get more information.
Level Up Your ESO Character Faster
It's much easier to level up the Dark Brotherhood with a high-level character: you have access to more zones, it's easier to travel around Tamriel, and you've got enough power to deal with any challenge! What skills does this guild have?
The Brotherhood has 12 levels of the skill line and this many skills:
- Passive skills – 5
- Active skills – 1
So how are there 12 levels and twice as few skills? That's because 2 skills have as many as 4 ranks each – so that's 8 levels for just 2 passives. The rest 4 levels give you the rest. And the good part that the only active ability comes first! Here's the full list:
RANK | SKILL | TYPE | DESCRIPTION |
---|
1 | Blade of Woe | Active | Kill a target instantly. Get 75% less XP for it. Can't be used against players or difficult targets |
2 | Scales of Pitiless Justice I | Passive | -20% Bounty & Heat after a witnessed Murder or Assault |
3 | Padomaic Sprint I | Passive | Get the Major Expedition buff that increases your movement speed by 30% for 6 sec. after killing an enemy with Blade of Woe |
4 | Shadowy Supplier | Passive | Get useful items once per day from an NPC in any of these places: any Outlaw Refuge, the Gold Coast Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, or Hew's Bane Thieves Den |
5 | Scales of Pitiless Justice II | Passive | -30% Bounty & Heat after a witnessed Murder or Assault |
6 | Padomaic Sprint II | Passive | Get the Major Expedition buff that increases your movement speed by 30% for 8 sec. after killing an enemy with Blade of Woe |
7 | Shadow Rider | Passive | -50% aggro radius while mounted |
8 | Scales of Pitiless Justice III | Passive | -40% Bounty & Heat after a witnessed Murder or Assault |
9 | Padomaic Sprint III | Passive | Get the Major Expedition buff that increases your movement speed by 30% for 10 sec. after killing an enemy with Blade of Woe |
10 | Spectral Assassin | Passive | 15% chance to go invisible after using the Blade of Woe, protecting you from being witnessed and receiving a bounty |
11 | Scales of Pitiless Justice IV | Passive | -50% Bounty & Heat after a witnessed Murder or Assault |
12 | Padomaic Sprint IV | Passive | Get the Major Expedition buff that increases your movement speed by 30% for 12 sec. after killing an enemy with Blade of Woe |
So the Blade of Woe is the signature skill taught by this guild that lets you strike an unsuspecting target with a lethal blow. The Spectral Assassin perk makes it possible for you to escape unnoticed. But even if it doesn't work, you'll still get half as little Bounty and Heat, thanks to the Scales of Pitiless Justice, and will be able to run away easier, thanks to Padomaic Sprint and Shadow Rider.
Speaking of Shadow Rider, it's a surprisingly good perk that will make your adventures around Tamriel much more enjoyable with far fewer cases of you being attacked by hostile NPCs.
One more useful passive that is the only one unrelated to combat on this list is Shadowy Supplier. It gives you access to the eponymous NPC in Outlaw Refuges and several other places. That NPC can give you unexpectedly valuable objects like:
- Sithis' Touch set items
- An antiquity lead to the Gaze of Sithis heavy helmet (Preserved Wraxy Feathers)
- Monk's Disguise (can be inside an Unmarked Sack)
- Various house items: Candles of SIlence, Light and Shadow, Poisoned Blood, and Sacrificial Heart
- Potions (Alliance Potions, Rogue's Portions)
- Alchemy materials
- Scrolls reducing heat & bounty (Counterfeit Pardon Edict, Leniency Edict)
Needless to say, nothing of the above is guaranteed. It's a random game as it's always the case with NPCs like that. But then again, you don't even have to pay anything. You can just approach the Supplier and get a freebie every day.

How much reputation is required to level up?
This guild requires surprisingly little experience for its maximum level: juts 515 total. It doesn't mean that it will be easy to handle the whole leveling process within a couple of hours – certain gating limitations are still in place. But you don't have to worry about grinding for weeks either. Here's a detailed table with experience data:
LEVEL | REP. TILL NEXT LVL | TOTAL REP. FOR THIS LVL |
---|
1 | 25 | 0 |
2 | 40 | 25 |
3 | 50 | 65 |
4 | 50 | 115 |
5 | 50 | 165 |
6 | 50 | 215 |
7 | 50 | 265 |
8 | 50 | 315 |
9 | 50 | 365 |
10 | 50 | 415 |
11 | 50 | 465 |
12 | - | 515 |
How to level up the Dark Brotherhood in ESO?
The Dark Brotherhood has several different activities for you to participate in to improve reputation with them. Here's what those activities are:
ACTIVITY | REP. GAINS |
---|
Story quests | 10-20 |
Marked for Death contract | 5 |
Killing Spree contract | 10 |
Black Sacrament contract | 10-20 |
Now let's take a closer look at each
Story quests
Story quests are a good source of reputation but there's a finite quantity of them and you can't do them repeatedly which doesn't make them perfect. But it's necessary to complete as many of them as you can when they are available. Each quest gives you 10 reputation by default but sometimes it's possible to increase the reputation gain by completing an extra objective. Some particularly important quests can give you 20 reputation without any extra objectives.

Black Sacrament contracts
A great source of reputation and other good things. You can access these quests after completing the Litany of Blood quest given by Nevusa in the left wing of the Sanctuary. Note that to become eligible for it you first need to complete first 3 story quests of the Brotherhood.
The contracts request you to kill a particular target with the Blade of Woe. The targets are numerous and scattered all across Tamriel so these quests involve lots of walking, teleporting, and travelling in any other way imaginable. Successfully eliminating a target gives you 10 reputation. Completing additional objectives doubles it.
You can complete one Black Sacrament contract per day. If you complete all the existing sacraments, you get the achievement Litany of Blood and 2 rewards: Cadaverous Assassin appearance & The Executioner title. You also get a satchel with goodies after completing each contract like this and the better version of those satchels (given to you if you've done additional objectives) can contain Dark Brotherhood style motifs.
Other contracts
There 2 more types of contracts: Maked for Death and Killing Spree. The former gives you 5 reputation, while the latter yields 10. Marked for Death contracts focus on eliminating a single target, while Killing Spree quests are more inventive and are not all similar.
You can complete any number of such contracts per day. We recommend focusing on the Killing Spree ones as they return more reputation and not much harder or time-consuming than Marked for Death quests. If you're looking to power level the Brotherhood's reputation, Killing Sprees are your best friends for sure.

So that's it: now you know what the Dark Brotherhood is like, what rewards they have to offer, and how to level up the reputation with them. Not all players enjoy leveling up guilds though. And if you're among them, you might find it a better idea to just delegate the process to professionals like us. Our professional player will take care of the Brotherhood for you and you'll get all the rewards much sooner without having to spend your own time on that!
