So let's get straight to the interesting part – and let's start from the beginning...
🤔 What is Spice in Dune Awakening?
In Dune Awakening, spice is one of the most valuable crafting materials. High-end armor, weapons, vehicles – you use it to create all of it and more. That means that you will never have enough: there's always some upgrade requiring even more spice. But what kind of spice? Did you know that it comes in two distinct forms? Sand or melange – which does what? Let's figure it out!
Spice Sand
Spice Sand is the raw form of spice that you collect in the desert. While you can technically find it in various locations, you're far more likely to gather it in the wake of Spice Blows – random events that trigger Spice Blooms: purple clouds that leave Spice sand scattered on the ground. Whenever you see a cloud like that, you should approach and start collecting the valuable resource.
There are three ways to harvest Spice sand:
- Manually – slow but silent, which helps avoid attracting sandworms. Most new players start this way simply because they don't have other tools yet.
- Compactor – a handheld device that pulls Spice sand into a heap. It has two versions: Static Compactor and Compact Compactor. The former is more common but loud and quickly attracts worms. The latter is quieter and safer to use, but harder to craft.
- Spice Harvester – a large vehicle capable of collecting huge amounts of Spice sand in a short time. You'll need an Ornithopter to carry it to the field and lift it up whenever a sandworm shows up. And it will pretty soon after it starts operating, because – you guessed it – it's noisy as a tractor.
Once you've collected some sand, it's time to refine it into something more useful...
Collecting Spice Sand is Easier at a Higher Level 💡
When you're out harvesting the Sand, things can go south pretty quickly – you never saw that stupid sandworm coming, did you? The higher your level, the more options you have to escape danger or fight back.
ArmadaBoost makes it easy to level up – all the way to 200 if needed. Just choose your current level and where you want us to stop, and get an adjusted price for that exact span – no overpaying. We'll start working on your order right after you've placed it – and it'll be finished in no time.

Spice Melange
Spice melange is the refined version of spice, used in the game's most advanced crafting and progression systems. Its refinement takes place in a Spice Refinery and requires a lot of running water.
There are three tiers of refineries: standard, medium, and large. The large refinery is the most efficient (more melange per unit of sand) – but also the most expensive to build. So most players start with a standard refinery and upgrade step by step as they gather more resources.
Melange has several important uses, which makes it very valuable and sought-after. So let's take a closer look at how players use it.
💎 What are the best ways to use Melange?
Here are some of the most popular ways to spend melange:
- Vehicles
- Weapons
- Armor
- Refineries and industrial buildings
1. Vehicles 🚁
It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that vehicles are the most important things you can own in Dune: Awakening. It's hard to imagine a high-level player without an Ornithoper, for instance – getting one feels like learning to fly after spending your whole life crawling.
Since we've mentioned it, the Ornithoper is a prime example of a vehicle that requires Melange. The Mark 6 Chassis and Thruster are two of its most crucial upgrades – they'll set you back 54 and 81 units of Melange, respectively. The upgraded Chassis is essential for transporting heavy equipment like harvesters or large resource hauls, while the advanced thruster increases the machine's travel speed.
Another Spice-hungry vehicle is the Sandcrawler. It's a massive harvester that can collect entire fields of Spice sand in one go, and crafting one from scratch demands hundreds of Melange, along with other rare materials.
2. Weapons 🔫
Ok, so you've got yourself a powerful vehicle to reach those high-value nodes – but how are you going to defend yourself when the stakes are so high? Bringing a Tier 6 weapon with you sounds about right – some of the deadliest guns and blades in the game, T6 weapons also require Melange to craft.
Take the Seethe, for example – a deadly sidearm that delivers mind-blowing headshot damage (404 DPS) and raises your accuracy to help land headshots more often. Crafting one will cost you 62 Melange, along with other rare components like Plastanium Ingots.
And each T6 weapon is like that: Melange demands go beyond 90 units for some. So as you can see, you can't get yourself an arsenal of mighty arms without stocking up on spice.

Few things compare to Tier 6 guns and swords – but if you have enough Solari, you can get yourself a similarly deadly, high-class weapon from the Exchange.
Sure, listings like that can cost a fortune – but what if you didn't have to earn it all yourself? ArmadaBoost can do the grinding for you: we'll deliver the exact amount of the game's main currency you need straight to your character – fast and reliable.

3. Armor 🪖
Great, now you can ride fast and shoot hard – but how about protecting yourself from harm? As your enemies upgrade their firepower, you'll need elite armor to keep up – and Spice Melange is part of the solution.
A great example of heavy armor that can be crafted with Melange is the CHOAM Heavy Chestplate. It offers 450 armor of strong protection and high resistance to darts, blades, and concussive damage. Crafting one costs 36 Melange, along with Plastanium Ingots and other valuable components.
Prefer lighter gear? No problem! Take a look at the Desert Garb: it reduces dash stamina cost and provides heat protection. However, it demands even more Melange: 83 units per piece, plus a long list of other rare materials.
4. Industrial buildings 🏭
Alright, so Melange covers all your adventuring needs: combat, protection, travel – but what about your base? Can Melange help you upgrade that too? Of course it can!
We've already talked about Spice Refineries which convert Spice Sand into Melange. But guess what? To produce Melange more efficiently, you'll need to spend Melange to upgrade your refineries first. Ah, the beautiful cycle of Melange in Dune Awakening!
To build the largest refinery, you'll need to spend 400 Melange - a serious investment, but a necessary one to make your refinement process as efficient as the game allows. With it, you'll get much more Melange from the same amount of Sand.
And Refineries aren't the only industrial buildings requiring Spice. You'll also need it for Chemical Refineries (for crafting fuel cells and advanced mats), Spice-Powered Generators, Advanced Fabricators (for high-tier gear), and more.
And the list goes on and beyond the four categories above. Essentially, any gizmo important for endgame costs Melange. So it's time to discuss how you actually get that much of it...
⏳ How to farm Spice Sand faster?
As you remember, Melange is refined from Spice Sand, so that's what you need to farm. The primary source of it are fields of Spice sand left by Spice Blows. So here's works best to do collect it effectively:
1. Use a Compactor
We've already mentioned Compactors: handheld devices for pulling Spice into heaps. In a way, it's some sort of a hybrid between a gun and a vacuum cleaner.
There are two versions: the one you'll likely craft first is called Static Compactor. It's relatively easy to make early on, but it has a drawback: it's very loud – so it won't be long till a worm comes to visit.
The low-noise version is called Compact Compactor. It costs more to craft, but it's worth every Solari, as it virtually eliminates the risk of attracting unwanted gigantic crawlers...
But while the Compact Compactor will speed up the gathering process, it's only good for small-scale farming. If you want to go big with Spice Sand, you need an equally huge tool...
2. Garage Must-Haves: Ornithopter & Harvester
Harvesters are the state of the art solution for large-scale Spice farming. These colossal machines playfully devour fields of the precious Sand. But, of course, they can't be left unnoticed by the bane of the dunes – those damn Sandworms. So expect those curious terrors to check you out soon after you start the harvester.
Obviously, your shiny expensive harvester won't last long if you just let Sandworms munch on it. That's where the Ornithopter comes in: you should use it to lift your harvester up whenever a threat appears. That's also how you bring the harvester to the site: you carry it from your base with the Ornithopter and take it back there with it as well.
Speaking of the Ornithopter, the community currently recommends the Scout model with a fully upgraded thruster for maximum speed and chassis for extra cargo capacity.
Even if you manage to dodge worms, there's another constant threat in the desert – other players. Bringing enormous machines to a highly attractive resource field is like putting a target on your back, so sometimes you might choose to use stealthier options...
3. Soft Step Boots and Thumpers
Let's get back to the Compactor, preferably the Compact one. Bring along a pair of Soft Step Boots – and take your gear off. Yes, that's right, time for some sunbathing! Unless you have some stealthy light gear, the best way to reduce the impact on the surface, is keep nothing but those boots on. This makes you practically unnoticeable for Sandworms – and barely visible for potential adversaries.
If you want to make sure that local Sandworms are busy freaking out elsewhere, you can use Thumpers – devices that produce rhythmic pulses to attract worms. Place one a safe distance away from the field and turn it on. It can also scare off players heading towards your spot – no one wants to mess with a Sandworm.
More tips
There are many more things to consider when you set out to farm Spice. We'll mention some of them in brief:
- Try the Deep Desert: Spice Blows there tend to produce more Spice Sand, so you'll likely get noticeably more spice per field. But it comes with a higher risk, as PvP is always on, the competition is fierce, and sandworms are more aggressive
- Build forward bases: If you notice that Spice Blows occur often in particular areas, consider building a small outpost nearby to make the logistics easier.
- Choose farming time smartly: Determine peak hours and avoid farming Spice Sand when there are too many players around. It doesn't mean that you only have to play when everyone else's sleeping – because when will you sleep then? – what it does mean is that even during your regular playtime there are windows with less player activity. Observing player patterns and taking notes can go a long way here.
And so on: many players end up developing their own harvesting scheme – and are not willing to share all their secrets. Can't blame them!
What's certain is that you shouldn't try implementing all the things we've mentioned at once. Take it step by step and over time the right moves will become second nature to you – turning you into a real Spice tycoon!
* * *
So that was your Spice Lord 101 – you're now officially harvest-ready! You know the ins and outs of both the Sand and Melange, including how to farm the former efficiently and what to spend the latter on. We'd say you definitely have what it takes to keep the spice flowing!
But even the most dedicated spice collectors sometimes need to take a break – or even a whole vacation. You just might need to prioritise some other activities: either in the game, or outside it. That's when getting more Spice Melange without the tiresome process of collecting Sand in the danger-packed desert could start to sound pretty appealing.
