What are actually Nightmare dungeons?

Nightmare dungeons are a type of endgame content in Diablo 4. It's deemed to be one of the hardest and rewarding activities in the game right now. The idea of it is adding additional effects to a regular dungeon. That is, monsters become stronger and get some extra abilities. You can also increase the difficulty level as well as quality of the rewards by using a better Sigil (we'll talk about that later). 

Not every regular dungeon can turn into a Nightmare one. There's a particular set of them that can and this list changes every season. Each zone has several such dungeons. Depending on your current world tier, you can access 3 or 6 such Nightmare dungeons in every zone. If your tier is 3 (Nightmare), you can visit the so-called Sacred dungeons (there are 3 of them per zone) that let you test your skill at tier 1 through tier 20. If your world tier is 4 (the highest, Torment), you can access tiers 21 through 100 – there are 6 such dungeons per zone. Naturally, tier 100 nightmare dungeons are very challenging and there are hardly any things you can do in Diablo 4 that are harder than them right now.

How do I access them?

To access a Nightmare dungeon you need a Nightmare sigil. You get your first one by doing the following:

1. complete the campaign
2. unlock world tier 3 (nightmare)
3. unlock the Tree of Whispers

As you'll unlock the Tree Whispers, you'll get a special cache as a reward that you can find your first Nightmare Sigil in. Turn in Whispers to the Tree for more caches that also have a chance of giving you a sigil.

But that's not the only source. You can actually craft sigils via the Occultist. Here's what you gotta do for that:

1. beat a Tier 1 nightmare dungeon
2. get another sigil either as a reward in the dungeon or via the tree of whispers system
3. beat a Tier 2 nightmare dungeon
4. repeat it all to beat a Tier 3 nightmare dungeon

Yeah, and right after beating a Tier 3 nightmare dungeon, you'll unlock sigil crafting.

Other ways to unlock sigils include defeating world bosses and finishing special events. So in total there are 5 sources of sigils that you should know of:

1. Whispers of the Dead
2. Nightmare dungeons
3. Special events
4. World bosses
5. Crafting
