Q: What reagents are useful for engineering?

A: Engineering uses all kinds of reagents and it's really hard to name just one category that stands out in some way. Well, maybe the stuff that miners collect (ore, rocks) is the closest to that but that would still be a simplification. Each recipe of importance has a completely unique assembly scheme and you will definitely need to visit the auction house every now and then to get yourself enough required mats. Which secondary profession would make it easier for you? Well again, mining must be the best option here since it provides engineers with the biggest share of reagents. So if you want to be as close to the "full-cycle" engineer as possible, this would be your best choice.

Q: How do you level up engineering during the boost?

A: We don't level up mining alongside engineering unless you specifically request that. We get all the mats needed for leveling up through the auction house. That means some serious gold spending but there's no better way in this situation. Engineering is quite a demanding profession in terms of investment. Surely, it returns much more than you invest, but still you invest first and get the ROI later. But don't worry, getting all the mats for engineering via the AH makes the process much faster and we won't have to run around the zones of the chosen expansion to get the necessary materials. That would slow it all down significantly and would also cost more.

Q: Why do I have to choose expansion in the options?

A: It might not be exactly intuitive but here's how it works. Engineering used to have a single progression system for all the expansions. So if you played WotLK, for example, and wanted to be a useful engineer, you had to first raise some skill levels in the Vanilla zones, then i the Burning Crusade ones, and only then you finally came to Northrend to do the useful stuff. It wasn't the best concept and Blizzard changed it at some point. Now whenever a new expansion comes out you can start learning relevant recipes right away, craft relevant items, use relevant mats, and so on. And if for some reason you decide that you need to go to one of the legacy expansions and level up the skill there (say, you want the chopper that you could make in the WotLK engineering), you can do that too – you'll have a separate leveling system for it. Convenient, isn't it? This is definitely the right quality of life improvement for the game! So you will likely need the latest expansion's leveling first of all. But take your time – you can choose as many expansions as you want. They all are given here and we'll boost your engineering in any number of them chosen.
