How to level up the Mages Guild in ESO? A brief guide

If you want to turn your character into a true champion, you need to make use of all the tools you have. And guilds shouldn't be underestimated in this regard, especially not the Mages Guild.

We know, some guilds feel more like bonus content (looking at you, Thieves Guild), but some are really, really important, and you shouldn't walk past them on your journey to glory in Tamriel. In this brief guide we'll tell you all you need to know about the Mages Guild!

What is Mages Guild?

One of the original guilds of the game, the Mages are a faction of sorcery lovers from all around Tamriel who love books and artefacts. While they might not be the easiest guild to level up, they certainly pay well for your effort.

The biggest advantage of having a high rank with this guild is their skill line. It's full of great abilities, both active and passive. Each level – except for the first one, perhaps – unlocks something truly useful and meaningful, so you'll feel the benefit with each step you make towards the cap level.

Another lovely reward you can earn with the Mages Guild is the Draug style motif. If you're into ESO fashion, you'll be interested to learn that completing this guild's daily dungeon quests is the only source of that motif. You can find related pages in a reward bag upon completing each daily quest, as well as materials used to craft them.

What does their skill line feature?

The Mages Guild's biggest selling point is their skill line. It offers lots of powerful spells that can enhance many different builds, so you should always have them as options. It even has one ultimate ability! Let's take a closer look:

So in total you get:

And those are not just some lousy skills that no one ever uses – they are real deal, genuine top-build material. Which goes to show that leveling this guild is absolutely worth it!

How do you unlock the Mages Guild?

It's really simple: you just approach a member of the guild at their branch in the starting town of your faction. The members in question are:

  • Curinure in Vulkhel Guard (Auridon)
  • Nemarc in Daggerfall (Glenumbra)
  • Rudrasa in Davon's Watch (Stonefalls)
They are hard to miss, so you won't have any issues with locating these NPCs. So just approach them, speak to them, and join the guild.

Level up your character sooner

How do you level up Mages Guild?

You get reputation with the Mages Guild by doing any of these things:

  • Finding Lorebooks
  • Completing the guild's daily quests
  • Earning relic recovery achievements
See how gains from those activities compare in the table below:

ACTIVITYREPUTATION GAIN
Earning a Relic Recovery achievement5 Reputation
Finding 1 Lorebook5 Reputation
Completing a Public Dungeon Daily quest10 Reputation
Assembling a full collection of Lorebooks20 Reputation
Now let's add context to that by looking at how many reputation points you need to reach various levels:

LEVELREP. REQUIRED FOR THE NEXT ONETOTAL REP. REQUIRED FOR THIS RANK
1700
29070
3110160
4130270
5150400
6170550
7190720
8210910
92601120
10-1380
Right. Well, level 10 is not very easy to get, let's be honest. What's the best way to get there?

Lorebooks

The community deems collecting Lorebooks the best option. Lots of game zones have multiple books and you can easily collect them using special maps made by community members or a dedicated addon called Lorebook if you play on PC. On average it takes about 200 Lorebooks to max out the guild.

But it can take less if you focus on finishing collections. Collections are sets of related Lorebooks that you can assemble to get 20 additional Reputation points. Most often those collections are zone-based: you just have to collect all the books in a particular zone. If you approach the task of hunting Lorebooks with collections as a priority, you'll need about 70-80 books total to finish your leveling.

Public Dungeon Daily quests

Doing daily quests and relic achievements won't hurt either, but these activities are not considered optimal when you work on getting level 10 with the Mages. Dailies request you to venture to one of 15 public dungeons and retrieve a relic and you can only take 1 daily on a single day.

The good news is that the dailies are shareable so if you have enough friends and luck, you can do up to 15 such quests within 1 day which translates to 150 Reputation points. That's great and if you have that many reliable friends, you shouldn't miss this opportunity.

You can take these quests from Alvur Baren in a Mages Guild branch in any of these locations:

  • Elden Root (Grahtwood)
  • Mournhold (Deshaan)
  • Wayrest (Stormhaven)

How long does the leveling take?

If you're not in a hurry to reach the max level with the guild, collecting books as you level up through various zones might be the best way to deal with it. You can pick them with any newly made character and keep your progress going since your early levels – just make sure to enter the guild first.

Power leveling the Mages, on the other hand, is not the most enjoyable process as it can easily drive you crazy with all that book hunting. Some well prepared players managed to pull a trick of reaching level 10 from 0 within little more than 5 hours. If that's your idea of fun, well, there you are – you now have a record to beat.
