Corepunk: what is this new MMO?

In this blog post we've decided to write about a very promising game that has been on our radar for a while. Corepunk combines various features of several different genres in something that looks like one of the most promising next-gen MMORPGs! Below you'll find a brief but informative description of what to expect from it!

What is Corepunk?

Corepunk is an MMORPG with several unique features. First of all, it has the top-down camera similar to how MOBA games have it. Few modern MMORPG games let you follow your character in such a way – the biggest title we can think of is Lost Ark. But in general it's more typical of MOBA games like League of Legends or action RPGs like Diablo IV or Path of Exile.

Secondly, the top-down camera comes with the fog of war. That means that you can only see what's going on in the areas close to your character or your allies. The rest is covered with a sort of fog and you can't see hostile NPCs and characters there. It's another feature that makes it similar to MOBAs and real-time strategies and the developers cite those genres as inspiration.

Itemization and UI are also reminiscent of games like LoL. In fact, the game looks like your LoL champion got enough of the Summoners' Rift and decided to go exploring the vast, vast surroundings, taking quests, gathering resources, and finding new friends. That's exactly what the concept of the game is. Take a look at it in this little preview:

What is its gameplay like?

The world of Corepunk is huge. And you can explore any part of it in any way you want. The gameplay is middle-paced, the game doesn't want you to do things as fast as possible – no, quite on the contrary. Take your time and enjoy your exploration.

Battles even with low-level enemies can be very exciting. Hostile NPCs are not just dummies made to be easily destroyed. All those wolves and giant insects won't go down without a fight and you better be cautious. Most of your abilities are skill-shots which means that you have to aim well to make as much damage as possible. Your enemies are in a similar position: if you find a way to avoid most of their powerful attacks, you'll have fewer problems with defeating them.

The developers have come up with a very thorough gameplay video that lasts for one hour. Take a look at what to expect:

Who is it for?

Lots of Corepunk's systems feel like something from an oldschool MMORPG. Slower pace, more incentives to explore the world without detailed guidance, challenging combat. If you've missed those old-time MMORPGs, here's your chance to experience something similar again. The industry surely needs something that is not WoW Classic to give us another take on the genre that's been stale for a while. It's weird, but maybe going back to the roots will help us build a better future for MMORPGs?

If you're a MOBA fan or a player who's had a blast with action RPGs like Diablo or POE, you should also take a closer look. The game has so much visual resemblance with them yet feels so different. The combination of the familiar looks and unfamiliar gameplay might be exactly what you need.

Actually if you're a player who's fond of trying new things, Corepunk will certainly come up your alley. It's unlike most other currently popular games in many ways and putting it on your list will make sense.

Take a look at a player's opinion in this brief video overview by MMOByte:

When will it be released?

It's still unknown when the game gets released. There's lots of polish to be done. Although the game was first announced in 2019, it's still under development. One of the major issues that the team has encountered throughout that time was war. The team behind Corepunk is called Artificial Core and they are partly Ukraine-based. As you might know, Ukraine was invaded by Russia back in 2022 and the war rages on till this day (February 2024).

That horrible problem didn't stop the team though. The development carried on and they've already had a couple of closed tests. It's safe to assume that in 2024 we might get several more such tests and maybe an open stage of testing too. If things go that way, we might hope to expect the release date to be sometime in 2025.

Does it have a beta / early access?

So far no. The first closed test for community members took place in late 2023. It's possible that we'll learn more about the open beta test or early access in 2024. So stay tuned!
